My wee girl is 6 months and I am planning to go back to work in a few months. Sad

Can anyone recommend Glasgow Council Nurseries? I am looking at the North/East End and the journey is into town so any on that way in... any views (good and bad) would be appreciated.

If anyone can recommend private nurseries - your views would be great too!

Thanks

Have you looked at the care commission website as a starting point of what's in the areas you're looking at?

DD is in a private nursery (Four Seasons) city centre, have seen one bad report & quite a few good reviews of it on here but thus far we're happy with the care she's receiving. She's been there 7 months. In real life, through various friends of friends etc have only heard positive comments. That said, what works for one may not for another.

Think it's good to go and visit a few, sometimes more than once at different times of the day/week to get a feel for staff & approaches to learning etc

also go armed with a few specific questions, there's lots of threads on here about what to look out for/ask,

It's a really hard decision to make but hopefully you'll find something that works for you & your DD.

Babyrub- have you completed an application form for any of the council nurseries ? My DS started in a council nursery last year and it is absolutely brilliant. I had a very bad experience with a private nursery first time round (four seasons waterloo street- back in 2009) and cant believe how much of a difference the council nurseries are compared to some private nurseries. I have absolutely ZERO complaints/issues/concerns with my current nursery, the staff are all so professional, friendly and are fully experienced child development officers and the head of the centre is always around every single day getting involved with the kids and parents- a total breath of fresh air.

My mum is a secretary in a primary school over in the east end and there is a family learning centre (council nursery) in the school that she works in and this is also a very well ran establishment - what i will also say is the council nurseries are inspected THOROUGHLY- by HMIE and care commission- the inspections last up to 5 whole days and involve lengthy discussions with LOTS of parents (I know this as i was involved in my sons nusery inspection in November and it was very reassuring to see just how thorough they are investigated and how many parents were actually spoken to) compared to most private nurseries only being inspected by the care commission alone for half a day.

Defintely try your hardest to get your child into a council nursery if you can- get a form filled in asap though as there are very lengthy waiting lists but well worth it- you will pay a fraction of the price you pay for private ones and alot better childcare (own personal opinion).

Best of luck- hope all goes well :)

Thank you to everyone for your responses,

I have started visiting and have been going through the Care Commission reports.

I was at one (council nursery) today and they were very welcoming and I felt quite comforatble there, they had a good report and the baby room only had a few kids in it. I have read another thread on here about things to ask when visiting so I took a list of questions with me.

I have the application for the council nuseries, but need to be sure about which ones I request which is my current dilema. I am hoping to visit a few more over the next week or so.Thats great about your views on the nurseries, really helpful. I had noticed that the private nursery reports I had looked at had only been visited (by Commission) for about half a day which dosent make me that confident in them where if the council ones receive a more detailed inspection that makes me more confident.

I will get onto the visits for the others, its really helpful to hear your experiences, thanks for taking the time to reply. (I am new to mumsnet if you hadnt guessed - had to try and figure out what DS/DD etc all meant) Getting there!! Grin
