Civil Service - danger of promoting too early?

I’m wondering if going for a promotion too early in the CS might limit my career options in future.

I’m currently a Grade 7 (previous career in teaching and then did the fast stream - lots of leadership experience and then a year so far as a grade 7). My line manager has been very clear I should be thinking about SCS and I think this is something I would eventually be interested in.

I’m starting to outgrow this current role (I left the FS early to take a permanent role as SEO and then grade 7 in the same directorate).

An ideal job has come up, but it’s at Grade 6. I can absolutely (and would love to) do it and think I could put together a good application. If I were successful, I’m worried that going for a Grade 6 now might limit me in future as my experience might not be broad enough.

I’ve discussed with a mentor more generally; his advice was to follow jobs I enjoy. And this is the problem, I would love to do this job, but would it be hard to get other Grade 6 roles without broader experience at Grade 7?

OP, I’m not sure why you are concerned. Unless you are working in an extremely niche area, where specific qualifications and experience are required, G7 and SCS posts are about your ability to manage and understand concepts across a wide area, in the same way Ministers have to get up to speed with different areas.
