What's the "real" speed limit on the motorway?

I don't drive much on the motorways, but when I do, I set my cruise control to the 70mph limit and it seems that nearly every other driver overtakes me

So what's the "real" speed limit on the motorway? Because it sure as hell isn't the posted 70mph one

The limit is the limit. Just because people speed doesn't mean 70 isn't the limit

Nope. I asked that at a speed awareness course and they said it might be a common misconception but it's not right. The limit is 70.

Edit: I was on the course for doing 34 in a 30 mph limit

What might be a common misconception? I wasn’t suggesting it was the limit just answering the question

Lots of people think you can go over the speed limit by up to 10%, which is what you said, when you're overtaking.

Maybe it's that you're likely to be 'let off' if you speed up to 10% over the limit, but IDK.

I stick absolutely to all speed limits except on the motorway where I go about 85 where I can.

I can understand this. I go into shops and never steal anything - I stick to the law - but where I can I pocket the odd thing I do. Likewise when it comes to GBH, I stick absolutely to the law, except when I can get away with it. Makes perfect sense.

I never claimed it was logical behaviour. It's just what I do.

I very much enjoy driving though places at 30 with some twat right up my arse then leaving them for dust at the end of the village when then have no ability or intention to get up to 60 because they want to stuck at 40 everywhere.

Being illogical is a personal choice, but not when it puts others at risk.

Indeed. But it's still a choice I am thousands of other people make. I'm rarely going significantly faster than at least half the cars on the motorway. 80 is a totally standard speed. Where possible. I spent huge chunks of the M25 in first gear at 5mph last week. Such fun.

The fact that others break the law too is no good reason to do so. I am sure you realise that.

I worked for a trauma service for many years and became tired of the number of people who thought because they had done it for X years with no accident then that made it OK and meant it would never happen. And tired of so many people saying "If only ....." In the meantime we were mopping up those with wrecked lives.

I assume you're still talking to me even though you haven't quoted me. Yes I know all that. Highly unlikely to change my habits. Soz.
