Newbie here - got the hang of a few such a AIBU, SAHM and MIL (obvs 😆), but can't for the life of me work out what OH (other half?), DH etc means....

Can you please share the meaning of acronyms that you tend to use on Mumsnet?

Thank you!

LTB (Leave The Bastard) is very popular, often used humorously!

YoullCatchYourDeathInTheFog · 31/12/2023 12:01

The ones which aren't on that list because MNHQ doesn't really approve, are ODFOD, as above, CF, which is much more likely to mean Cheeky Fucker than Cystic Fibrosis, and the one to use with caution because it will absolutely get you banned: FOTTFSOF(AWYGTFOSM)
Fuck of to the far side of fuck (and when you get there fuck off some more)

Would that get one banned? I think if you say it like 'I would tell them to FOTTF....' you would be ok. But if you said directly to another poster to FOTTF..... then you may get sanctioned.

YoullCatchYourDeathInTheFog · 31/12/2023 14:24

True. You can swear as much as you like in general terms, as long as you're not aggressive towards other posters.

Gingerbeerfear · 31/12/2023 14:33

Oh ok …. I’d definitely got CF wrong 😑 oops

What did you think it meant?

Decimate · 31/12/2023 14:58

I always read CF as Cunty Fucker.

I always read CF as Cunty Fucker.

But they're often blokes

There was a thread recently where someone was using CF for something completely different (can't remember what offhand) and it caused a certain amount of confusion/amusement.

Gingerbeerfear · 31/12/2023 18:24

C**t Face …

I've seen ETA a few times where in context it can't be 'estimated time of arrival' but it's not obvious what it does mean? It's not in the mn acronym list.

"Edited to add"

it's a new one because MN only recently added edit function, but it's widely used on other forums.

Pardon me for being old-fashioned but is the F-word de rigeur nowadays? It’s no wonder there are all these foul-mouthed (in my opinion) adolescents walking the streets nowadays. We have such a rich language and have ended with this…

MN has been renowned for decades as a forum for adults where it's fine to swear. If you're easily offended by swearing then it may not be for you and that's fine.

If you do want to stick around then I strongly recommend that you don't spend your time objecting to other people swearing because you won't change anyone's mind and it make you any friends.

I’m not actually looking for virtual friends so that’s not a problem. Some of the stuff that’s posted is really quite interesting so I will be sticking around and, in the job I did, I developed a hide like a rhinoceros so I’m not offended either. But all my working life - and believe me I’ve heard it all - I continued to be amazed at the foul stuff that could out of ostensibly bright and intelligent people’s mouths in ordinary conversation, but until now I was never in a position to comment on it, as the public were our clients. Just getting it off my chest…

marshmallowfinder · 11/11/2024 20:08

You don't need to use the ridiculous D everything, by the way. It's incredibly annoying.
