Hi all, so what are the abbreviations all about?

Been watching from a distance for some time and decided to register today and participate but one thing puzzles me. I have no idea what the abbreviations stand for in different conversations.

DD, DS, and all the others. It's all gobbledegook to me. Can someone write down what they mean as I have no clue. Not seen them on any other forums I visit apart from the usual SIL or DIL.

Thanks!

Hello 👋
The D is dear/darling and often more tongue in cheek than sincere.
Darling husband DH etc.

Jazzyjeff44 · 29/06/2022 14:44

DD - dear daughter
DS - dear son
DC - dear child(ren)
DH/DP - dear husband/partner

Hth (hope that helps Grin)

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 29/06/2022 14:45

Dear son- ds, dear mother- dm, dear father- df and so on 😊

GiantKitten · 29/06/2022 14:47

@GrannySmith

There used to be a glossary on here but I wouldn’t know where to start looking for it now 🤷🏼‍♀️

But few (if any) are actually unique to mumsnet, so you might as well just use google for any you’re puzzled by.

GiantKitten · 29/06/2022 14:49

The D ones have been around a very long time; they originated in the US.

Of you search it up there is a mumsnet acronyms list.

picklemewalnuts · 29/06/2022 14:50

DFO do eff off
DFOTTHSOF do eff off to the far side of eff.
TSSDNCOMOP or similar, is basically 'no comment'.

LTB- leave the b**d

That pretty much covers the key ones...

Off the top of my head

PFB - Precious first born (baby obv)
SAHM - stay at home mum
FTM - full time mum
STBXH - soon to be ex husband

and the confusing one DF which seems to be either dear friend or father

gamerchick · 29/06/2022 15:20

You don't need to use the D ones though. They're ruddy irritating still no matter how long they've been around Grin

Or Dear Fiance

It's just as quick to type the full word so I don't know why people bother abbreviating.

I get so confused with them and it ruins the flow of me reading the post if it's full of abbreviations as I have to stop and think about who it refers to.

snoochieboochies · 29/06/2022 15:35

Genuinely, why? Why don't people just write the words? I don't get it. On a phone you can store predictions. Okay, it saves time, but why should people spend time deciphering instead of people spending the time in the first place to write the word?

halfsiesonapotnoodle · 29/06/2022 15:37

Op, it's fine not to use them. They're ridiculous. I just write my son, my daughter, my H etc.

SummerLobelia · 29/06/2022 15:42

RTH is read the thread

RTFT is read the fucking thread.

Either way it helps to read the thead, or at the very least the OP (original poster) comments before commenting - particularly in AIBU (Am I being Unreasonable).

Oh- and 'cancel the cheque' is MN speak for 'all those people who have not read the fucking thread are suggesting something that has been suggested eleventy billion times and it they are just embarrassing themselves'.

Welcome to mumsnet. :) It's a great place. Do stick around!

SummerLobelia · 29/06/2022 15:42

*RTT I meant

Dippydonky · 14/07/2022 21:35

As a newbie, I just read this thread and clicked the link etc. Just really need to share my shock at an abbreviation………. YY for Yes…. Yes is only 3 letters to begin with lol
