Immigrants from HK seeking for advice

I am one of the many HK families planning to escape from the rapidly deteriorating city and migrate to U.K. We have long been suffered from cultural invasion from mainland China and the last thing we want to see is the fleeing HKers causing bad influence to the other places.

What would you advise in how we could become welcomed immigrants and neighbours in your country?

I am mainly bumping your post until someone more knowledgeable to come along.

I am unsure of how the offer of residency works, but have you a plan for work etc?
I have worked with a number of Hong Kong ex residents (they actually all went back, however I don’t imagine they will be staying now either). But they based themselves within similar communities, around north or west London.

And lastly, I’m so sorry for what is happening to Hong Kong. Britain should be in a better position to support the residents and force through the protections they were assured of.

I would welcome you and am sorry what is going on in Hong Kong - UK is mostly a very very tolerant country and has many different nationalities.

It is absolutely right that Hong Kong citizens are welcomed here to the UK. Hong Kong has been part of the Great British Family for a long time.

I hope you will be successful in relocating here, and I hope that you will find the UK welcoming and supportive.

I honestly don't know. I don't know anything about the process anymore either.

But as far as I'm concerned you're welcome and wanted. As above, I would seek out established communities here in the UK, I can imagine that the change will be a shock for your family and you will all appreciate some familiarity from people with a similar background.

Or just venture out! You can be you, here. There will always be pockets of people everywhere who have a problem with immigrants. But it's not all of us.

I'm not in the UK, but I would say just be yourself. My neighbourhood is predominantly Asian immigrants and they are the loveliest, tidiest, friendliest people I've met. I am grateful to have them as neighbours.

Britain is generally pretty welcoming to most. We’re very multicultural, bar a few rural areas.

Don’t worry about doing anything to “fit in”. Anyone who doesn’t welcome you can get lost. Even Our Tommeh is an illegal immigrant now

Find somewhere you like, settle in :)

Thanks for your warm and supportive messages. I, like many other HKers, am often very concerned about what impression we are leaving to the others. It is therefore a relief to know that most people don’t have a negative feeling on us.

To answer to EvilPea’s question, BNO holders will be allowed to live and work and study here for 5 years, apply for ILR status, and eventually full citizenship.

People who are eager to move is now busy doing the maths for their families, learning about life in different parts of U.K., studying the job market, and perhaps planning to start a business. The wealthier ones are already “casually” buying houses before moving, as you may see from the news. Everyone is eager to start a new life and not living under terror anymore.

Generally most areas are quite welcoming to immigrants but if you want a good Chinese community other than London then Manchester, Liverpool and Leeds would be worth looking into
