Hello mumsnet. I am concerned that my 13 and 17 year old children are being left on there own next week for a week, during termtime while the Mother goes on holiday. Am i being stupid to worry or is this a normal thing to do?

If the 17yo is sensible and the 13yo isn’t likely to act up then it is reasonable. I assume they can get to school okay and they have neighbours or friends around should go wrong? You are also aware so they can call you for advice etc and i assume they will be left with food or money to buy stuff that is needed?

NSPCC agree with you and state under 16s should not be left at home overnight alone, let alone for a week!

But the under 16 won't be left alone, they will be there with the 17yo. Some 17 year olds are living on their own with a baby and manage fine. Your average 17 yo should be able to cope fine as long as the 13yo hasn’t got any behavioural issues.

Sounds fine to me, we were left for a week 11,13,14,15 with a 17 year old
We had a great week

Sounds ok. but all depends on how sensible the 17 year old is.

Can't they come and stay with you??
