Autistic mums — how do you find parenting with your autism?

Hi all,

I’m an autistic person(recently diagnosed), and I’m really interested in hearing from autistic mums about how you navigate parenting. I do not have any children myself.

If you’re comfortable sharing, I’d love to know:

• What parts of parenting work well for you
• What parts you find more challenging
• Any routines, strategies, or approaches that help
• How you manage sensory overload, emotional demands, or social expectations
• Anything you wish you’d known earlier in your parenting journey

I’m trying to understand how other autistic mums experience day‑to‑day parenting — what feels natural, what feels hard, and what you’ve learned along the way.

Thank you to anyone willing to share. I really appreciate it.

Are you thinking of having DC @Annoymous3659?

I had 4 DC and only got diagnosed after two of my DC did
I am a SAHM and carer for two DC
I definitely couldn't of worked and held a job down
The hardest part was dealing with the lea for EHCPs and schools who had no understanding or compassion

The noise and chaos of the early years was hard - I actually found working helped as it gave me a break.
Now the hardest thing is having an autistic child. Not the child themselves (she has her moments but generally I know how to support her), but the constant battles for support, EHCPs, finding a suitable school (which may not actually exist), and the lack of understanding that goes with having a child who 'doesn't look autistic'.

Thank you all for sharing your experiences. I am thinking about starting a family and with my recent diagnosis I am trying to consider what I need to anticipate
