ADHD meds and menstrual cycle/the pill

Hi 😃

Relatively recently diagnosed ADHDer here… I started taking Elvanse 3 months ago (30mg for 1 month, then increased to 50mg) and 50mg seems to work really well for me as my period is ending and for a week or so after but the week before my period it doesn’t seem to have the same effect. To the point on multiple occasions I’ve emptied the bottle out and counted how many pills I have left as I’ve genuinely wondered if I’ve imagined taking it. I’m just wondering if anyone has had any success with taking a higher dose at different times of the month? Or if going back on the pill would help level my hormones out throughout the month which would help to find the right Elvanse dose? I do need to look at contraception options anyway (I was on the pill but then ran out a few months back and just haven’t got around to sorting it out). Any advice much appreciated 😀

Afraid I don't have any actual helpful advice but I'm on a number of adhd facebook groups and lots of people seem to say the same as you are saying and I think possibly they have a 'top up' of the same or different meds but I may have imagined that!! Everyone obvs is different but I am on methylphenidate and it doesn't seem to be less effective while on my period but it's relatively early days for me so maybe I'm just not paying enough attention!

Methylphenidate doesn't work on my period at all, so I just don't bother for about 2 days.

I definitely notice a variation- in the luteal phase of my cycle I don't need meds as much as I feel more focused but just need something to get me started.

I'm on methylphenidate quick release as it allows me to vary it. My max is 10mg in the morning, 10mg at lunch and 5mg at 4pm. I've learnt to see the it as a subtle difference and just roll with it, rather than expecting to feel the same all month. As long as I'm not losing focus for days on end, that's the main thing.

The only time I did feel very similar all month was when I took the progesterone only pill. I was so calm all month.
