Speech and language therapy isnt available in my area

I was diagnosed as autistic as a child but never got speech and language therapy even though the assessment showed that I can’t understand body language, facial expressions, inferred meanings, and a number of other things that I still haven’t had help with which massively impacts my everyday life and ability to communicate, understand or make friends. I contacted the local SLT team and they don’t help autistic adults. I despair

Unfortunately that kind of thing can’t really be functionally supported by a speech therapist. If we could help things like that through some simple speech therapy we’d pretty much be in the business of curing autism. Traditionally some speech therapists may have drilled kids on those things but in reality it didn’t really have much positive impact and in the worst cases was pretty traumatising and made kids feel much worse about their differences. You may well have had a lucky escape by not getting that ‘support’ as a child.
