SEN progression into adulthood

We are a German-British family considering relocation to the UK from Germany. My son is age 10, non-verbal, with all corresponding disabilities. He is a physically strong and a healthy boy, with a gentle, affectionate, disciplined nature, which I think will serve him well in the future.

My understanding of the German system, at the moment, is that after completing the education system, he will then, as an adult, either live in supported accommodation, and receive support there, or he could live in his own property, and receive support at home, such as with daily administration, shopping, hygene – whatever is required.

I have an idea of founding a charitable venture (UK or DE) and employing Lenny (and others) to work. There are opportunities in property development and management, which is what I’ve been engaged in while raising my two children, and this is the area, particular where unskilled labour is required, where I think Lenny could work. Atleast, these are my thoughts to date.

What I would like is to understand the British system of SEN progression into adulthood. (I’m considering Yorkshire, East Anglia and Scotland). Could someone please comment on how adults with intellectual difficulties are supported?

I also do not understand how the education system will handle placing a non-verbal child without a British diagnosis into the system! If there is any experience out there, I would also love to hear your comments. I envisage continuing the developmental program that I’ve developed for Lenny myself within a home setting until the bureaucratic mess has been resolved.
Many thanks.

Herzliche Grüße aus Thüringen,
Paul C (aka Daddy Cool)
