Why is the understanding and empathy for autistic people so low?

I'm reading another post on this forum where the comments are totally lacking in understanding. The one where the autistic brother is still at home. These posts all end up the same with people saying the autistic person needs to 'live in the real world', 'sort himself/herself out', 'pull themselves together'.

When people post about depressed family members or those with learning difficulties and other issues and disabilities, the language used is so different. It makes me feel as though we are just not believed. They think we are just being awkward on purpose.

I'm so grateful for the ND people on here who jump on and correct the assumptions, but it's just so tiring seeing it every day.

I'm not referring just to that post though. That's just an example from today which made me think. There are comments on there from people who obviously have no understanding how autism presents. A bit of balance comes when posters who I know are autistic come along and explain why autistic people behave like they do.

ADHD gets the same, sometimes even worse.

Why do I need to post the thread? Because YOU say so?
If you know which one I'm referring to, why do you need me to post it?

And they accuse us of lacking empathy.

I hear you! It's beyond belief sometimes.

I didn't see the posts from the previously banned member, but fecking good riddance to them.

@WhisperingAutistic I agree, the ableism and ignorance on this forum, and in every day life really, is so depressing.

Beat me to it!

It is weird as I have plenty of empathy for other people but if I need support on my sleep disorder I know there is none. I am resolved to only have two cups of tea daily from now on in instead of four as it was finishing me off. I have tried this strategy in the past but never stuck to it. Now ds is 18 and in full time job I can enjoy the peace and quiet more and feel calmer when I am working. Two cups of tea a day are ok for me and that way I get a quality 7 hours sleep a night.I also take 500 mg magnesium early evening for sleep quality which helps anxiety and nerves.

I was once told by a very old fashioned cousin that I shouldn't have autism as I have been to grammar school!! WTF. Crazy.
