Travelling Abroad with ADHD Meds

Hi everyone,

I currently daily take 30mg Elvanse (Lisdexamfetamine dimesylate) & top-up with 5mg Dexamfetamine Sulfate in the afternoon when I'm flagging.

I have unexpectedly the opportunity of a holiday abroad (location of my choosing) in the next couple of weeks. My prescribing Dr is on holiday themselves at the moment and although I've asked my pharmacy - they don't know and told me to ask my prescribing Dr (she's private - and I'm not able to speak to any other members of her clinic).

I'd love to go on holiday with my usual meds, they help me in so many ways, not just work related. But obviously I don't want to end up in an episode of 'Banged up Abroad' for controlled substance smuggling!

As I can choose a destination, does anyone know of any shortcuts to understand if I can travel with my meds, google is overwhelming and not terribly helpful. I'm keen to book and start looking forward to my first trip abroad for nearly a decade!

I'd ask your GP surgery. I think you just need a medical confirmation that they are your own prescribed medication.

I don't think there are any countries where they are specifically allowed so probably best to get the confirmation just in case.

Thanks for the reply @BertieBotts but Gps aren't allowed to prescribe these drugs so I'm not sure they would write a letter for me?

You've already had them prescribed though, haven't you? They are just confirming that.

I think you need to check official travel advice for anywhere you’re thinking of going. Each country has different rules in place. We’ve just been to Dubai and they are very strict for example, even with a prescription you’d need to go through their government approval process in advance and gain permission to bring the meds in. We didn’t take DS’s ADHD meds for that reason.
