I have an appointment through "Right to choose" next month. Would be interested to know about anyone elses experiences of the assessment with Psych UK, or any other similar ADHD online assessment! Thanks!

Hi @Zebrasandfairytales I'd love to hear more about the process. I got my diagnosis privately but I'm also on the waiting list for Psychiatry UK as is my DH.

How long did you wait? What was the assessment like? How are they dealing with meds?

Zebrasandfairytales · 20/11/2022 16:01

@AshGirl I waited a lot less than what I had mentally prepared for! Referral was accepted mid August so only waited three months which I think is really good compared to a lot of others experience.

the assessment was good, just under an hour, very fact focussed and filling in gaps really, I cried but that was more about me than the psychiatrist - who was lovely and very patient, when I’m nervous I tend to babble on and not answer questions, he very politely and gently brought me back on topic!

he said the wait for meds could be up to six months and they don’t like to say it will be sooner (although my wait for assessment was half the time they said and when the person booked me in they said had recently taken on a load of new staff to help meet demand.

I feel like a huge weight has been lifted!

Thanks @Zebrasandfairytales - that's good you didn't have to wait too long for the assessment, but why is there such a long gap to talk about meds?

Zebrasandfairytales · 22/11/2022 19:32

@AshGirl its a separate team that undertakes the titration process (adjusting meds over time until the dose is at the right level) and isn’t done by the Psychiatrist or by your local GP. The wait to see the titration team is a similar wait length to getting the assessment, I guess because it’s a similar queue of people?

Did you get your diagnosis there and then @Zebrasandfairytales? did he ask you anything unexpected?

Zebrasandfairytales · 04/12/2022 16:29

Yes, he told me at the end of the appointment. Unexpected, hmmmm. I asked him about type (he said I was combined which was a bit of a curveball) and he explained how in his personal opinion the types are a bit outdated as it’s rare someone fits neatly in to those boxes, particularly women as we often mask due to societal expectations and behaviour can be more subtle. Plus humans are different on different days. It just gave me a bit of a new perspective eg. Not putting myself in a box!
