My special interests have cycled round..

..to one of my old favourites
JAPAN!
I've been immersed for 3 whole days now, all because I visited a Japanese garden a few days ago 🤣

That's how easily a special interest is triggered. This will now be my life until one of my other interests is triggered in a similar way.

Do your special interests come about in a similar way?

I can't say my interests work in the same way. but the garden visit sounds wonderful 🌾🍁🌿- I had a huge interest in Japanese art and crafts for a wee while when I was much, much younger as I was interested in how it had influenced illustrators like Aubrey Beardsley and designers of the late 1800s.

Currently, back to veg gardening, this time in pots and planters as otherwise the dog would mush any veg plot

I used to really enjoy crocodiles and alligators. I would would Steve Irwin's Croc files on animal planet every Saturday as a child and my parents would buy me every book they could find on them because I'd just sit and draw/read all I could.
Then recently I went to the Aquarium for with my birthday with my husband. When we were leaving my DH surprised me with a crocodile reusable mug and it set me off again by reminding me how much I loved them in the first place, I then told him everything I knew about crocodiles 🐊

I hope you don't mind me saying that this is fascinating and it's so lovely to hear the joy in the way you write about your special interests. My autistic DS is 7 and we go so deep into his special interests that I miss them when he moves on and takes us with him. I might let him know that if he ever cycles back to Thomas the Tank Engine, I will be ready and waiting. In the meantime, I hope your time 'in Japan' is brilliant and really fulfilling.

Have you seen the YouTube channel "Life where I'm from" my son loves it and the family who show the videos are from Japan. My DS loves the Japanese daycare video because he's always been interested in schools in other countries 😊

BarrowInFurnessRailwayStation · 02/05/2022 12:50

I love bonsai trees, that's about my limit when it comes to Japan 😆 🌳

I find my interests go in cycles as well, usually reflected in my youtube viewing history. They include:

Animals and countryside
Urban exploring
Science
Religion
Health
Cats
Weight loss - usually My 600lb Life
History

I absolutely lived pokemon when I was younger, and clocked up hundreds of hours on the gameboy game. Half a lifetime later, when my (also autistic) 5oy got into pokemon, it was amazing. Having not though about it in years, everything instantly came back and we both kind of fed into each other intrest, replayed the red game together and watched through all the episodes.

@HerculesMulligan my (young) relative has just discovered the Star Wars universe. And is now in full throttle. I’m absolutely loving it. I think he was a bit gobsmacked that middle aged Auntie Hexen knew so much. Let alone that I saw the original trilogy in the cinema when it first came out and was equally smitten.

FloorWipes · 02/05/2022 16:09

Japan is such a good one. Enjoy!

GetTheGoodLookingGuy · 02/05/2022 21:18

I appear to have got back in to the Harry Potter Fanfiction series I started writing a decade ago. I finished the third one in 2016 and then started the 4th, but hadn't written any of it in well over two years until this morning, but I've written a chapter and a half since this morning! Currently re-reading the first three so I don't forget anything important!

MangoBiscuit · 09/05/2022 06:44

I love it when that happens! Especially when it involves a craft of some sort, then I get to use all the supplies I bought previously, and have hoarded ever since.

transformandriseup · 09/05/2022 07:13

Mine used to come of the back of fanfiction, Pirates of the Caribbean lead to an obsession with the 18th Century navy and ships. I read so navy books that when we visited HMS Victory I could have given tours myself. But like most special interests it just switched off one day.

OutlookStalking · 09/05/2022 07:21

We're going to dlp in November so Im researching every single xombination of meals/locations of supermarkets/bakerys. Timetables. Disney review boards.

Im not even really into "Disney" as such. Just in a holiday spiral 😁.

I wish wish I could make myself interested in my house/meal planning!

LilyRed · 09/05/2022 22:24

As it has been raining for the last week or so and the garden is too soggy, I'm back to art research with the vorticists, dazzle ships and camouflage (an old favourite)

DisorganisedAlways111 · 13/05/2022 08:07

Yes! Occasionally I'll have one that comes back around for a bit - usually in Autumn, my interest in all things WITCHCRAFT comes back!!
I'll get all my books out that I've bought over the years, I'll be on YouTube, Instagram, blogs etc looking at all things Witchy 🧙‍♀️
Very exciting times! 😂

Catcrazylifter · 13/05/2022 08:11

Iv just sickened myself with about 2 months worth of ancient egypt hyper fixation brought on by Moon Knight.

The Johnny Depp case has led me back to Gone Girl, I can feel a true crime fixation coming on for the next month or so 🙈

Who knows what the next one will be..

AlternativelyWired · 13/05/2022 13:58

Dd is fixated on everything Japan and has got me interested too. Her interests are longer and more intense than mine but I was very fixated on brexit for ages, the trans debate and feminism and country music. Still am but to a lesser extent. I kind of wear my brain out then something else catches my interest.

AlternativelyWired · 13/05/2022 14:01

Food too. Cycles of only eating a few things then it moves to something else. A varied diet is not my thing unless I can vary it over a year or so

romdowa · 13/05/2022 14:05

Mine always cycle. Mainly between games, movies , books , tv series and true crime , crochet , perler beads and then I might throw a new one in the mix. Currently I'm gaming but I'm itching to read but I also have adhd and I just can't get into a book.

EinsteinVonBrainstorm · 16/05/2022 14:24

Not really, my obsessions are always around TV/ movies even though I don’t even really like TV. They’re pretty stereotypical too: Harry Potter, Friends, The Big Bang Theory, Game of Thrones. I’m currently in the midst of a Twilight obsession like some sort of preteen 😂.

LilyRed · 16/05/2022 21:37

@ofwarren I saw this the other day about Japanese woodblock prints of Kabuki, thought might be of interest museumcrush.org/kunichika-and-the-colourful-world-japanese-kabuki-prints/
