What do I say to GP?

A few months ago I finally spoke to my GP about me suspecting I am autistic after I had been thinking about it for a couple of years.

He asked me to fill out something online and I was given a reference number which I have to him.

I'm not sure if I'm officially on the waiting list for an assessment or if there's something else I need to do. I'm not sure if the next step is just for me wait to hear from the assessment centre. He did mention that he needed to do something on his side.

Now I don't know what to do. I know I should follow it up somehow but I don't know what to do or say.

Can I just ask the receptionist to check on it for me. Or do I ask for a GP appointment? If I ask for an appointment and they ask me what is it for do I just say to follow up something? I feel weird asking for an appointment for a follow up rather than an actual thing.

I know these are just basic questions that I'm asking you all for but I'm just procrastinating about it and feel like clear instructions of what to do next will help me get on with it.

Thanks

You can ask the receptionist, they will have access to your notes.
I would say something like, "in my last appointment with the doctor he said he was going to refer me, can you just check if he's done that and if there is anything else I need to do?"

If you phone the surgery there is generally an option for “press X if it’s about a referral”.
I’d press that then the secretary can check everything has been done.

Thanks for your replies. There aren't any options before I get through to the receptionist. It's a tiny surgery, just one GP, one nurse and one receptionist in at a time. That's another reason why I don't like contacting the GP because I'm not just a number.

I found it easier to make apps at my old GP where I would be seen by a different person each time.

Ugh I still have massive resistance to calling.

Check to see if there is email?

I'm not sure why you'd get a follow up interview. At mine it would be dealt with by the receptionist to tell you where we are in the referral process. Maybe if he's changed his mind and he's not referring you, an appointment might be necessary but not for chasing paperwork. Just ring and ask. That's much better than sitting worrying about it. Good luck.

It sounds to me like they either haven’t received your reference number or haven’t done anything with it. In my experience they will usually get back to you about the results of the questionnaire you filled out, and they will say yes we’re referring you or no we’re not. Then when you’re referred they will call you in fairly quickly for a preliminary assessment to see if it’s worth putting you on the 2-3 year waiting list for a full assessment or not.
