music for babies that isn't rubbish

i've downloadedn a bunch of lullabies and to be grank they're crap, can anyone recommend music that babies will like that won't hurt my ears, i've got some classical stuff but i would like soething with words so i can sing along too.

i remember an article in the guardian music bit years ago about grown up bands who also made albums for kids, i've searched but can't find it

When my dd was small we used to play music like Enya, Simon & Garfunkel and Ladysmith Black Mambazo.

If you are thinking of childrens music though, perhaps a couple of Disney soundtracks might suit?

Dds like showtunes (Singing in the Rain, On the Town etc), Imagination Movers (disney show, up to date Monkees), Jack Johnson 'Curious George' soundtrack, Muppets they dance around the kitchen to a lot of stuff we listen to, dd2 sticks her fingers in her ears when she doesn't like it! We did them a whole playlist on Spotify with songs from disney etc, a sleepy one and dancey one. I think They Might be Giants did an album for kids.

A friend bought ds this when he was born. Which was probably why he used to love me twirling him round room singing Sunday Girl to him very badly by about 6 months old.

No no no, make the most of it while your baby is still young enough to be happy listening to your music!! You have plenty of time ahead of you to listen to kids' music and be denied full access to your stereo system. Babies enjoy music. They don't know if it's not meant for them.

ah ladysmith b m good shout, he likes tinariwen and amadou et mariam ~(well he seems to he's only 6 weeks so not that dicerning yet but i do)

it's the disney type stuff i'm not so keen on and these lullabies i've got are awfully slushy and american-esque

We've got a few cds by a guy called Raffi, some of his lyrics make you go , but they are so catchy, and bouncy

Now I'm not suggesting you introduce your LOs to old school acid/hardcore necessarily but do try your personal back catalogue of favourite tunes, your LOs are bound to like some of them.

There are some bands writing alternative music for kids - it's for children a bit older than the really little ones though.

They Might Be Giants have done a whole load of stuff for kids.

There's not a huge selection on it at the minute cos I only stock stuff me and my own kids like, but we add something new every week or so (I've a big backlog to add at the minute but I'm mad busy in work)

As for grown-up music that kids like - if it's a baby you can get away with more or less anything. Our eldest used to go to sleep to Black Sabbath and for a long while her favourite artist was Missy Elliot - thankfully she mauled the CD so much is stopped playing before she start to ask me what the words meant

bumping semi-ancient thread to recommend woodie guthrie's songs to grow on for mother and child (i think?) for nurseryish rhymes but with folk cred and also remembering i used to settle dd1 to sleep with brian eno (the pearl), the criteria being that it was soothing but i could stand listening to the same thing night after night after night after night. still love it.

Any Lemon Jelly albums are great. My children particularly liked 'Nice Weather for Ducks'.

Babies like all types of music- sing along to your fav cds and your baby will prob love it... I've heard it said that they will recognise tunes they heard a lot in the womb (my friend swore that her newborn responded to David Bowie after she lietened to it constantly whilst pg )

Herman Dune, Jim Noir or Misty's Big Adventure are fun and child friendlyish

Oh and my son loves the Toy Dolls punk version of Nelly the Elephant

I second Pannacotta's recommendation, the Lullaby Cd is fab, very gentle and soothing.
