I don't know where to start. Any ideas? I don't want silly yee-haw stuff but am stuck. Bought some Alison Krauss and Union Station and liked that, (though perhaps not all the Bluegrass-iest tunes quite as much)but what to listen to next?

What about Johnny Cash?

EllieG · 25/02/2009 22:22

Oh yes, I like him, I forget.

Who wrote that 'Country Roads' song?
And what is Willie Nelson like?
And is Emmylou Harris any good?
And what about newer artists - any recommendations?

Have you listened to Kate Rusby. It's folk music, not country. But i like alison krauss and kate rusby so you might like them both too.

Hassled · 25/02/2009 22:28

The Dixie Chicks are good. And Johnny Cash - the later Hundred Highways stuff is less countryish, but brilliant.

EllieG · 25/02/2009 22:31

Had forgotten Dixie Chicks - yes quite like them. Thanks for youtube link - stupid 'puter is too slow tonight to look at it properly, but will check out tomorrow.
Will also check out Kate Rusby. I would like some more female singers to listen to at moment.

Country Roads was John Denver (very underrated, I think)

Emmlou Harris is wonderful - just get a 'Best of' to start with.

Willie Nelson - tick

Kris Kristofferson - tick and underrated.

Gillian Welsh - try her maybe

Nancy Griffith - try her

mrsdisorganised · 25/02/2009 22:35

Ooops forgotton it was him, I love 'leaving on a jet plane'....

EllieG · 25/02/2009 22:35

Thanks Tinker - v useful. Will go do some shopping on Amazon. If you are buying music it isn't really spending money, you know. (Same rule applies to books too)

I read your first sentence and was going to suggest Alison Krauss.

Have you listened to Waking The Witch? They're not quite country/not quite folk, acoustic band who are VERY good.

tigerdriver · 25/02/2009 22:40

Alison Moorer - now Mrs Steve Earle (also Steve Earle but he's a bit more yee hah)

Anything Emmy Lou

Dolly Parton - Little Sparrow (yes really)

Gillian Welsh

Lucinda Williams - best album "car wheels on a gravel track"

Laura Cantrell

Can't go wrong with Neil Young of course.

If I only had to listen to one sort of music (and was allowed Bruce Springsteen as a luxury) then it would be all sorts of C&W

MaryAnnSingleton · 25/02/2009 22:40

Try Jenny Lewis and the Watson Twins/Rilo Kiley

LackaDAISYcal · 25/02/2009 22:42

Lyle Lovett is good
Steve Earle if you like it louder. Copperhead Road is a great album.
John Denver did Country Roads; his songs are lovely.
A collaboration of Willie Nelson, Johnny Cash, Kris Kristofferson and Waylin Jennings called "The Highwaymen" is good...not too twee.
Willie Nelson very good. He wrote "Crazy" that the world and his wife have done a cover version of.
Johnny Cash's American series is fantastic.

Not too up on more modern stuff unfortunately

UnquietDad · 25/02/2009 22:42

You know those hidden backwards satanic messages and the like allegedly hidden in the grooves of records?

Well, if you play country music backwards, the singer's wife comes back to him, his dawg comes back to life and his crops grow!

Tinker · 25/02/2009 22:44

Oh yes, to Steve Earle - definitely Guitar Town.

EllieG · 25/02/2009 22:44

Ta muchly will have a look. This is all very useful, thank you people

marcelthemonkey · 25/02/2009 23:40

What about Reba McEntire. She's great and not too country!

mrsruffallo · 25/02/2009 23:44

Wichita Lineman
One of the best songs ever!

tigerdriver · 25/02/2009 23:48

Oh Mrsruffalo, I was going to suggest that, it's a superclassic.

mrsruffallo · 25/02/2009 23:52

Clement · 25/02/2009 23:52
