Artists you just don't get

mayorquimby · 12/02/2009 11:00

i'm not talking about flash in the pan "don't see the fuss about Chris Brown.." type artists (ok he could be around for decades but at the moment he hasn't achieved legendary status)

i'm talking about people who don't rate the beatles or clapton or some other accepted legend who everyone else thinks is genius.

for me it's Bob Dylan (i just really don't like his voice) and probably Morrisey who for some reason his fans still think it makes them "underground/on the fringes" to like him despite being one of the best known artists in the country.

OP posts:
MaryAnnSweetheart · 12/02/2009 11:01

um,Janis Joplin

AnathemaDevice · 16/02/2009 19:38

I can't stand Morrisey, whinging git with an annoying voice.
I don't like The Beatles (they're ok, but I don't know why anyone who wasn't there at the time would listen to them).
Stone Roses. Dull blokey music for dull blokes. I really don't get why they were adored by so many- no tunes, and Ian Brown cannot sing.
Rod Stewart- He makes my skin crawl.

Are you me mayorquimby? Feel exactly the same way. Don't like either of their voices. Every smiths/morrisey song sounds the same to me. I also don't like Leonard Cohen.

Not that keen on Janis either MaryAnn!

I do luuuuurve the Stone Roses though

janeite · 16/02/2009 20:05

I love The Smiths and The Stone Roses so am probably on the wrong thread.

Can't stand/get:
The Beatles especially Paul McCartney
Bob Marley
Pink Floyd
Rolling Stones
R&B
Mariah bloody Carey
Any of the kind of music that teenage boys play on their phones on the back seat of the bus
Whitney wingey Houston
Tina Turner
Led Zeppelin or anything of that ilk
Erasure - pure crap
Phil Collins - vomit

spicemonster · 16/02/2009 20:08

No one likes mariah carey though surely janeite

janeite · 16/02/2009 20:09

I really offended a TA at school by slagging off Mariah Carey!

fruitshoots - that's cheating - no one likes Level 42

janeite · 16/02/2009 20:21

Level 42/Erasure = same kind of crap imho. Only liked by balding 40something men who think they were cool in the 80s and really weren't.

CharleeheartsherChains · 16/02/2009 20:23

A band around at the moment that i really can't stand is the TingTings that 'Thats not my Name' song really irks me.

I also don't like or 'get' Metallica.

springlamb · 16/02/2009 21:52

Er - I like Level 42. I do, I'm afraid.

But I don't get Erasure. And I don't get modern rap as I can't understand the lyrics enough to rap with them.

Sidge · 16/02/2009 22:05

I don't get

The Beatles (I mean, I get why they were socially incredible but most of their music is just bleuh)

Coldplay - why?

Tillyscoutsmum · 16/02/2009 22:07

Was going to say Bob Dylan as soon as I saw the thread title. Never got David Bowie either. Nor Pink Floyd

notnowbernard · 16/02/2009 22:12

Bob Dylan

The Beatles

Steely Dan

AnathemaDevice · 18/02/2009 10:35

Not sure if Coldplay count as legendary, but they are incredibly overrated. Saw them at Glastonbury a few years ago and they were soooooo dull. I wandered off halfway through their set.
I don't understand all the fuss about Radiohead, either. The Bends is a great album, but I think everything else they've ever done is pretentious tosh hyped up by music journalists who are too scared to point out that it's just a load of bleepy noises and whining.
Don't think I should have watched a programme about Britpop last night, it's made me realise how much I hate almost all music! Dear oh dear, I've turned into a grumpy old git at 27....

Molesworth · 18/02/2009 10:38

Another baffled by Bob Dylan's legendary status here.

Morrissey wrote some good lyrics but his 'nee-naw-nee-naw' two note singing style used to get right on my wick.

Russell Watson. Not that good, I'm afraid.

Love the Beatles though.

Aniyan · 18/02/2009 10:39

Elvis - just don't get it.

pillsthrillsandbellyaches · 19/02/2009 21:14

pink floyd

led zep

Mintyy · 19/02/2009 21:21

Blimey Janeite, how can you put Bob Marley in the same list as Phil Collins and Whitney Houston?

Am also at juxtaposition of Level 42 and Erasure. Can't see what they have in common at all.

The artist I just don't get is Bjork.

Oh and have thought of another one - that very annoying small Scottish woman who sang Happy Birthday, was in Gregory's Girl. Name escapes me.

themoon66 · 19/02/2009 21:28

40 cent or whatever his name is... rap bloke. Don't 'get' any rap blokes actually.

EsmeWeatherwax · 19/02/2009 21:31

Morrisey and the Smiths. In fact, all that jingly jangly indie pish. Whats the point?

Not exactly legendary either, but I've always been fascinated by how people could like the Lighthouse Family. I mean, how?

Mintyy...Clare Grogan. Band was Altered Images. Yep, they were shit too...

Oh and Thin Lizzy.

mumof2teenboys · 15/03/2009 13:19

Don't get Pink Floyd, never have.

Coldplay leave me, well, cold!

The Beatles have always confused me, i just don't get them.

Biffy Clyro, can appreciate their ability but don't get them. ( much to my sons disgust)

Nirvana, hated them with a passion, boring, miserable t**ts.

Disenchanted3 · 15/03/2009 13:21

OMG, so much beatles hatred, I love them! (am 24 so not there originally, lol)

I hate morrisey,

DH (23) loves him.

EVERY song sounds the same, and he sounds like hes standing on a cat.

MrsMills · 15/03/2009 13:23

U2.

Never have got them, don't ever want to either.
