Right, currently listening to the Ramones, Johnny Cash, Butthole Surfers, Social Distortion, Amebix, Doom, early Metallica, Joni Mitchell, Patti Smith, Leonard Cohen, Avail, Bad Religion and Husker Du.

Any suggestions for newer (well post '95!) bands?!

Oh yes... the Gutter Twins (Mark Lanegan and Greg Dulli from Afghan Whigs)

EachPeachPearMum · 18/01/2009 20:19

I loved Husker Du when I was younger and loved sugar.
I really like Muse atm, and Killers.
I listen to kerrang in the car too- which can be good for picking up on newer bands.

RaggedRobin · 18/01/2009 21:05

for people who like fleet foxes, try panda bear

and animal collective

loved husker du too - though these two bands are not rocking, they're big on melodies, which husker du could do just as well.

Definitly try Lasf.fm
Its great for new ideas (although I am happily somewhat stuck in the early 90's )

Might as well copy paste my list from another thread:
RDF
They Might Be Giants
Faith No More
Chumbawamba
New Model Army
Mazzy Star
Stone Roses
The Velvet Underground
Jellyfish
Glasvegas
Mylene Farmer
The Dead Milkmen
Oysterband
Therapy
Belle & Sebastian

I've heard of RDF too...in fact DP was listening to them at the weekend

Forgot to mention a personal favourite of mine, Reverend Horton Heat - ace Texan rockabilly music. He's great live too if you ever get the chance.

schneebly · 19/01/2009 20:32

glasvegas
MGMT

KnickKnack · 19/01/2009 20:45

Now I'm developing a huge urge to listen to rdf! But alas my old tapes are almost unlistenable-to, and I've yet to acquire them on CD

millenniumfalcon · 19/01/2009 21:10

ooh cool kk i'm nowmary on there (lordy, i have so many usernames!). and don't worry about embarrassing, half my stuff is roald dahl and ub40

KnickKnack · 19/01/2009 21:19

Have just added you...apparently our compatibility is "very high"

hotCheeseBurns · 19/01/2009 21:20

Listen to my favourite band in the universe - Coheed and Cambria. They're metal/prog rock.

Definitely get on last.fm.

millenniumfalcon · 19/01/2009 21:43

lol kk i just put your radio on and it's playing my theme tune (fool's gold - come to think of it i don't think i've actually got a copy, i just play it all the way through in my head...)

Malkuth · 21/01/2009 12:59

Anakay you have reminded me of loads of stuff that I never owned as roommates did and that I must get!

In the same vein, if you haven't already do check out Talk is Poison, Dead and Gone and Whorehouse of Representatives.

Malkuth - I've never come across anyone before who'd even heard of the Butthole Surfers! - I got to know their stuff when I lived in the US briefly in the 80s and had a friend who was a DJ on college radio....

I love all these suggestions - I was so into music/new bands when I was younger and am quite sad that I seem to have turned into my mother and have to keep asking people who bands on tv, etc are!

Malkuth · 21/01/2009 16:09

Grapefruitmoon I know how you feel. Except I suspect my mum might be more up to date than me now!

Definitely check out Alice Donut if you like Butthole Surfers. Also Paul Leary did a solo LP a while back which is really good. And if I remember correctly P were Gibby from Butthole Surfers and Johnny Depp.

oh oh oh, i forgot the Melvins - still going strong! A Senile Animal is a wicked album.
