I've always been a fan of the Jeff Buckley version but was never quite sure what it was about - is there a very profound message or am I just hoping it is deep and meaningful?

It's about the bible.

Hassled · 20/12/2008 18:13

Faith, redemption, guilt, lust, orgasms - that sort of thing

LedodgyChristmasjumper · 20/12/2008 18:13

Well I heard there was a secret chord
That david played, and it pleased the lord
But you don't really care for music, do ya?
Well it goes like this
The fourth, the fifth
The minor fall and the major lift
The baffled king composing hallelujah
Hallelujah
Hallelujah
Hallelujah
Hallelujah

Well your faith was strong but you needed proof
You saw her bathing on the roof
Her beauty and the moonlight overthrew you
She tied you to her kitchen chair
And she broke your throne and she cut your hair
And from your lips she drew the hallelujah
Hallelujah
Hallelujah
Hallelujah
Hallelujah

Well baby I've been here before
I've seen this room and I've walked this floor
I used to live alone before I knew ya
I've seen your flag on the marble arch
Love is not a victory march
It's a cold and it's a broken hallelujah
Hallelujah
Hallelujah
Hallelujah
Hallelujah

Well there was a time when you let me know
What's really going on below
But now you never show that to me do you?
And remember when I moved in you?
And the holy dove was moving too
And every breath we drew was hallelujah
Hallelujah
Hallelujah
Hallelujah
Hallelujah

Well maybe there's a god above
But all I've ever learned from love
Was how to shoot somebody who'd out drew ya
And it's not a cry that you hear at night
It's not somebody who's seen the light
It's a cold and it's a broken hallelujah
Hallelujah
Hallelujah
Hallelujah
Hallelujah

Hallelujah
Hallelujah
Hallelujah
Ha llelujah

Hallelujah
Hallelujah
Hallelujah
Hallelujah

See David's in there and Samson and Delilah.

sparklyxmasfairy · 20/12/2008 18:16

it is about love desire selfishness redemption sex sorrow life

and not for manufactured singers to slaughter it with hideous arrangements

multitasker · 20/12/2008 18:18

I read something about king David being in love with Bathsheeba - the wife of another, so there was the idea of love lost?? Then I'm a bit lost...

he sent her husband into battle with no hope of coming out alive so he could have her the evil fiend

Interestingly, it was David's DCs who suffered, he went on to become a great king, wrote psalms etc. Though he was the great, great, great (can't remember how many generations now) grandfather of Jesus, so the family line did eventually recover!

TinselianAstra · 26/12/2008 16:42

'Cut your hair' must be Samson and Delilah, right? Unless there's another lesser-known hair-cutting incident in the Bible.

I don't think it's supposed to really make sense.

dittany, that's truly profound (and probably very true )

Love, love, love this song and totally agree with sparklyxmas fairy.

I do think its an incredibly vicious song actually - vicious but wonderful! I wonder if more shagging would bring out the poet in me?

my Fav LC son is Alexandra Leaving anyone know who that is about?

slayerette · 26/12/2008 17:18

oxocube - exactly! That's why I object so strongly to the dreary romaticising of it by Certain Reality Show winners.

According to Alexandra it's about first love, when a girl really likes a boy and is trying to get his attention but he's not interested

oxocube · 26/12/2008 17:23

slayerette, that's funny. I have wondered many times if anyone actually asked her what the song was about and what her (primed) answer would be . Sadly, her interpretation of the lyrics doesn't surprise me in the least. Which classic will they slaughter next year I wonder? I can guarantee it will be something I love

UnquietDad · 05/01/2009 10:27

aaagh, I've decided the most annoying thing about Burke is not even the big Mariah-shift in the middle, it's the way she sings "your faif was strong" and "overfrew ya".
