and now I need somebody to recommend a book on which to start the dcs, please. They're 7 and 5, if that makes any difference.

My DS is 6 and his teacher gave him two books:

"A Dozen A Day" - Edna-Mae Burnam published by The Willis Music Company. This is a book of warm up exercises to get them used to the notes. Was £4.99

"Piano Time" by Pauline Hall published by Oxford (has nice illustrations by Quentin Blake). £7.99

dd(7) has Bastien Piano Basics 1
