Where did all the good music go?

I’m listening to absolute radio, as I always do, it just pumped out God put a smile on my face by Coldplay, followed by Uviversally speaking by Red Hot Chillies THEN Song 2 by Blur.

It got me thinking, these years were truly special for deep and meaning music, and I don’t think we really appreciated it at the time..

Ive heard a couple of good ones recently, one by Djo ‘End of the beginning’ and I another called ‘I Care’ by Turnstile (love that one).

But still, they’re very few and far between these days. Anyone else mourn those days?

I think it’s entirely subjective.. only one of the songs you’ve listed I would consider good

CowCowSheep · 11/02/2026 11:16

Yabu to put Coldplay and music in the same sentence.

Fends · 11/02/2026 12:40

Coldplay? You’ve got to be taking the piss 🤣

TwistedWonder · 11/02/2026 18:11

Depends what genres you’re into. I’m into funky/vocal/soulful house and there is so much fantastic music being made.

Get yourself a teenager. There’s tons of wonderful music, you just need to be exposed to it by those in the know.

Yep. My Ds aged 13 and my Dd 22 get me listening to all sorts of weird stuff!

Music is so subjective.

I’m 45 and currently absolutely obsessed with Bad Bunny and Sam Fender 😂

BurntBroccoli · 11/02/2026 19:59

Sometimes you form connections to songs in your formative years and modern stuff just can’t compare.

IMO anyway!

Yogibearspicnic · 11/02/2026 20:04

Tastes change and rock type stuff not ‘in’ at the moment, especially groups. Since 2020 only two groups have had a UK number 1 single, and one of those two was The Beatles.

My 20 year old loves 90’s music - he’s been to see Oasis, Cast, Ocean Colour Scene, Stereophonics and Pulp in last year.

Devilsmommy · 11/02/2026 20:25

You'll never beat late 90's/early 00's as far as I'm concerned. I'm a metal head and music has just got worse year on year

shellyleppard · 11/02/2026 20:26

This is interesting. My 20 year old loves the 80's music. Regularly goes around singing bad manners songs.....i was a teenager in the 80's and we had such a variety!;! My favourite band though is definitely elbow.....❤️❤️❤️❤️

DangerQuakeRhinoSnake · 11/02/2026 20:40

I agree to an extent that older music is the best, however the recent soundtrack to K-Pop Demon Hunters is very very good!

Sam is great. Have you seen him live?

Sam is great. Have you seen him live?

No, sadly but I’d absolutely love to.

Humdrumqueen · 11/02/2026 23:00

Coldplay! 😂

knittywit · 11/02/2026 23:02

You lost me with Coldplay. Never a duller band.

ChocolateHobbit · 11/02/2026 23:03

All I listen to is Linkin Park, and I'm 36.
Everyone's definition of 'good music' is going to be vastly different.

Surely every generation thinks "their" music was the best?

I'm 75, and loved (and love) the music of my generation. Beatles, Dylan, Stones,The Doors, Loving Spoonful, America, Crosby Stills Nash and Young, Janis Joplin, to name But a few.

But I recognise that's it's each to their own. My adult child introduced me to people like Bruce Springsteen, The Stranglers, Jam. But I tried to leave them to my child.. Because I thought no child really wants their parent to actively like their music. I certainly didnt.

Maybe that's just me

No, sadly but I’d absolutely love to.

My DS saw him at The O2 mainly because he loves the support band - Wunderhorse

Thewonderfuleveryday · 11/02/2026 23:31

There's masses of good music around. Olivia Dean, Fontaines DC, Taylor, Harry, Raye, Dave, Miles Smith, the k-pop demon hunters lot.

fruitpastille · 11/02/2026 23:38

Try listening to 6music for a bit more variety and some new stuff.

Badinfo · 12/02/2026 08:15

I like a lot of different styles of music but have gotten bored with the radio recently, I just discovered Yungblud last week, OMG his newer stuff off his current album is blowing me away, I can't stop listening to it, he has a stunning voice.

Nicecatneighbour · 12/02/2026 08:43

Ive discovered lately that Trevor Nelson on R2 in the afternoon plays great music.
Agree though, music tastes are personal.

SpiralSister · 14/02/2026 10:08

Coldplay! Dear God.

I am well stricken in years, and listen to R6 which is great for old stuff and discovering new. There’s loads out there!
