Anyone here a DJ? Novice with questions about set

I’ve recently trained as a DJ, I’m late 40s (female) and spécialise in Ecstatic Dance but also love tribal house, EDM, AfroHouse / Brazilian, etc.

I have done informal sets for family and friends’ events and have another one of these coming up at the weekend for a wedding (pretty alternative crowd and full of music heads) - but late night spot eg midnight.

Not sure how to start my set given the crowd (age 50s/60s) - go all in with a big housey track to set the vibe or ease in with some disco-y remixes and then steer them towards the AfroHouse stuff? All of it will be danceable…

Or it won’t matter as everyone will be smashed?

I'm also late 40's and female. Used to play Funky House and Hard House in the early 2000s in bars and clubs.

You could start with a disco-y remix. Jamiroquai is always a winner. The Dimitri from Paris remix of Canned Heat has some nice drums at the start which would work with your Afro beats!

Or if you want it to boot off at midnight then Armand van Helden's mix of Nuyorican Soul's Runaway.

You've sent me down a rabbit hole on You Tube BTW 😂

This is great, thanks @aboveandover Currently listening to the AVH one. The Jamiroquai would. be a good crowd-pleasing start.

I am also thinking of kicking off with Horny (San Pacho/ToBeHonest mix, Spotify) it is a massive tune (family friendly I think!), might be up your street.

Or something from Ahmed Spins (Waves & Wavs).

Yes ecstatic dance will send you down rabbit holes!

Horny (San Pacho/ToBeHonest mix) sounds great :0

Ooh I think you'll like this...

Montano Vs The Trumpet Man - Itza Trumpet Thing (Original 12'')

Great late nineties Ibiza tune

Gadjo - So Many Times on Subliminal (Extended Mix)

BrightNewLife · 15/07/2025 17:43

Think I’ll use both of these @aboveandover !

My head seems to be approaching this with a club mindset, but do I need to be aware of extended house-y tracks as not being very wedding-y? Typical wedding music is shit anyway, so maybe I have more leeway with a midnight spot?

Do you still DJ?

Alas no as I don't have time at the moment. I can only play vinyl.

Yes you could play the original (chart?) versions of those tracks if available as they will be shorter and sweeter if you know what I mean. I've never played a wedding.

80's remixes might go down well too. Max Graham VS YES - Owner of a lonely Heart for example.
