for a teen moving up to full size from 3/4 nylon string guitar.
classical but more 'campfire style' music.

It really depends on the type of music. Actual classical/ Spanish etc stick with nylon. Finger picking style songs- steel strung. The next is narrower with a steel strung guitar too which may make it easier. Best to go into a shop if possible and try several styles. Some have a jumbo size body or cut away at neck. Also, do they want semi- accoustic with the ability to plug into an amp? Just be aware steel strung will be harder on fingers for a while. Enjoy your search!

dc tried a few different ones and we are all go for a steel string one.

now for finding one... they don't seem to come up second hand as much... at lest the teacher is up for it as well.

You can get a nylon stringed one then restring with steel. DH did that with one of his.

Please don't restring a nylon one with steel strings, they don't usually have the steel rod in the neck to take the tension and the neck will warp.
There are loads on Facebook marketplace round us .

no, I won't re-string.
part of the appeal of steel string is the more slender neck making some finger positions easier.

At this point they need to be choosing their own instruments. Every guitar is different and every guitar player is different. My mate has just bought himself a new guitar that he loves, but I had a go on it and the neck is completely the wrong shape for me. You need to take them to some music shops so they can play some different guitars and let them choose for themselves. As for nylon or steel strings, again, let them choose.

No, no no no, do not do that. There are some steel strung jazz guitars that have a slotted headstock that look like nylon strung classical guitars but they aren’t the same at all. You’ll fuck up your guitar big time if you change the type of strings you put on it.

please don’t give advice on things about which you clearly know nothing.

If you decide to go with steel string, then you could get one with a pickup and a socket for a lead, so it can go through an amp. Either that or buy a semi-acoustic, which is basically an electric guitar with a hollow body.

It all depends on the type of music the person is interested in really, and whether they envisage playing with other people.

Alright, calm down. It's not like I advised OP to inject air into her veins. It was an honest mistake.
