hi folks

two questions in one here

Firstly, my DP has a acoustic and electric guitar which he plods about with but not proficient in . I have also a Clarinet which was given to me

I have wasted hours doing nothing but making noise dabbled about with both but want to focus on one of them and have no strong calling for either. Any thoughts on which one is the best for a not played anything since the three blind mice on the flute at school newbie ??

Also do you need to read music to play music , it looks double dutch at best for me

Seen lots of free stuff on youtube too

Guitar will be easier to pick up if you cant read music as there are millions of online resources aimed at learning without being able to read.

Plus, you can learn some chords and strum along.

Clarinet is harder in many ways as its assumed youll be proficient or learning to read music. Plus, getting your embouchure (mouth positioning) correct for playing is harder without a tutor. Added to the fact its a lot harder to play a tune as you cant just play the chord note.

Can you afford a tutor? A good tutor can correct your technique, YouTube won't be able to point out for you if you're copying wrong or ingraining bad habits.

Depends what you like the sound of, what you want to do with it ie play pop/ folk songs- guitar better. Jazz/ classical/etc and play in a wind band orchestra orchestra - clarinet. Enjoy whichever you choose.
