Artists who sing in an affected way

This is a different generation to the warbling and wailing of Whitney and Mariah back in the day.

Mimi Webb currently pouting and badly enunciating her way through Red Flags 🚩on the Graham Norton Show.

Don't start me on Tom Grennan who sounds like an alien.

Paloma Faith sounds like she is pouting at the same time as she is singing.

Just sing, fgs!!!

Yes it's this. No training. Some are worse than others but the ones who sing through their nose and don't enunciate are the worssst

Who does that? I'm interested in the difference between trained and untrained. I don't think I've ever taken notice before.

Yeah me too - not impressed much with the current crop of pop singers although I don't agree it's the case that vocal training stops you having a quirky style - it just stops you singing badly through your nose, gives you more power and flexibility and stops you damaging your vocal chords etc.

I was gob smacked when I heard Lady Gaga doing the Sound of Music tribute to Julie Andrews at the Oscars a few years ago - she CAN sing!

I have a current crush on country and western singer Josh Turner - fab deep voice - he had to stop and take vocal lessons a few years ago because he had vocal chord damage - fine now!

I just listened to Lady Gaga do the Sound of Music - she's incredible.

Cleo Laine’s singing used to drive my mum insane with her ‘affected ‘ voice. Eartha Kitt’s voice used to irritate me too. Both are loved by many for their unusual singing voices though, so it must just be me!

Lol! There's some hilarious comments in this thread! Too many to mention I'd say.....

But remember when we were young - Our peers & parents watch TOTP in despair, while we watched our idols & took our radio's everywhere! Yes a different time & that's what's happening here.....Many of us are just getting bloody old 😀I am 57 now & still play the music channels on telly & find a lot of new songs are so good just like we did way back in the 70's & 80's! I have to agree with nearly all if not all of the singers that have been mentioned! Lady Gaga is very talented for sure....remember that now, pop songs are written/composed with a laptop or PC even the harmonies are very of then just the singer with layered vocals etc - Very clever & the whole style of music has become something that is made this way! Many confuse Autotune with 'Vocoded Vocals' something completely different to AT! There still artists who have excellent bands that tour etc so pop music is thriving & it always must do! There are though of course some extremely annoying so called singers out there I guess there always were....Just seems to me despite all I've said, there are some extremely annoying 'Singers' out there 😀Chris Martin, Paloma Faith, all those girls that sing in that pained forced melancholy voice Lol so many do that! Today mainstream pop is run by the producers & songwriters! Can't think of anyone offhand that is standout today....I like Dua Lipa for example, great producers & computer whizzes creating really lush songs but of course, the vocalist has to be good & some are not! We have so much choice nowadays it's easy to avoid what we don't like! That bloody Lewis Capaldi Ffs! Wtf is he all about?? He is just not a good singer at all! I could go on but I've said quite enough!! 😁

I love the different ways Tim Booth sings in different songs. And the way he mixes things up within one song.

I adore Daniel Graves from Aesthetic Perfection, he's done ballad, screechy, regular voice, all sorts, and also has recorded different styles of alternative on different albums- experimentation is good.

Can't beat a bit of Lady Gaga, or Benji Webb from Skindred and Dub War - he mixes up dub, reggae, metal, rock, in his singing.

Mytholmroyd · 22/04/2023 00:04

I also like a lot of the stuff Postmodern Jukebox produce - they have some great musicians and featured singers and I love listening to how different modern songs sound when done in different styles.

Kissedbyfire1 · 22/04/2023 00:08

Affected style you say? I give you the cringe fest that is Lily Allen.

StepAwayFromTheBiscuitJar · 22/04/2023 00:08

I agree some pop singers really aren't great, but opera makes me lol. It always sounds like they're taking the piss.

Mytholmroyd · 22/04/2023 00:08

Yes the Tony Bennett album was wonderful. Hadn't seen the Metallica clip before! That's some contrasting styles right there! 😂 Love it!

ninetieseyebrows · 22/04/2023 00:48

Ellie Goulding's voice springs to mind - not a fan

Ellie Goulding is awful, lets not even mention the abysmal Cheryl Tweedy

halfsiesonapotnoodle · 22/04/2023 03:20

Can't stand the way some of them sing in an American accent, when they're not American.
