Rock music is a bad influence on my kids!

When my eldest son started secondary school in September of 2019 he made some new friends. For some reason he decided it was a good idea to ditch his old friends and hang around with new ones. Anyway, once his friends started coming round after school I noticed something about them - they were fans of rock! Even worse, they were in a rock band! My DS's new best friend was wearing a t-shirt that said 'Lynyrd Skynyrd'. And I'm sure you'll believe me when I say this band is a satanic ritual of crazed anarchists who think playing guitar is a talent!

After awhile his friends started being an influence on him! Instead of listening to empowering music he started listening to something called 'Classic Rock'. I didn't stop him as I wanted to investigate further.

After around 2 weeks of his newfound interest in rock music my son asked if he could play the drums! I have made it clear to him that if he ever wants to play an instrument he can play a classical instrument like a trombone or a piano.

I don't want my son to turn into a satanic anarchist, please help!

You're absolutely right, OP - you can't go wrong learning something sensible like piano. I recommend steering him towards Elton John and Jerry Lee Lewis?

LivingDeadGirlUK · 26/08/2020 21:32

What? no MOTHERFUCKINGSLAYER!? Now THAT is empowering music :)

Bluemooninmyeyes1 · 26/08/2020 21:33

Is this post a joke? God, you would have been one of them stupid mums in the 50’s complaining that Elvis was too ‘sexualised’ or burning Beatles records in the 60’s for being a ‘bad influence’ on the youth of the day.

Your lucky your son has good taste in music- unlike you.

(By the way, your first name is very apt.)

Gurufloof · 26/08/2020 21:36

Bloody certain my parents said the same about my love of heavy metal.
Bet they'd be disturbed by
Riskay — “Smell Yo Dick”
TISM — “Defecate on My Face”
Bitch, Suck D* - Tyler the Creator

You get the idea?

Exactly, you should take him to one of Lang Lang’s concerts, I recommend one where he Co produces Metallica

You serious OP?

You’ll have more things to worry about than this with a teenager. Music is an ok diversion. Much better than many options.

FloreanFortescue · 26/08/2020 21:44

Wowza.

Mooey89 · 26/08/2020 21:59

indemMUND · 26/08/2020 23:35

Your kid needs the good word of Rammstein. And a little Lindemann. Keep him away from lighters, eh?

Hello everyone, thank you for the replies. I have been forced to make a new account due to multiple difficulties in logging in! Update on DS: his habit of listening to rock music is diminishing, but I still need to find out why he'd listen to it in the first place!

Maybe your son has been streaming the Devil"s music on your devices and it has corrupted your software. You might be able to fix it by playing some calming classical music backwards.
Horehound · 01/09/2020 20:03

Haha!

bg21 · 01/09/2020 20:10

rock music and I mean real rock music is the only influence your child needs 🤘🤘🤘

Shinyletsbebadguys · 01/09/2020 20:36

GrinI'm being obtuse I really am but I can't work out if this post is real or a joke ?

I mean DP and I both grew up listening to rock music from marilyn Manson to rammstein and we are fine. I mean ok other than the odd sacrifice of a responsibly sourced goat on a full moon but who doesnt let their hair down once in a while.

Sadly DC decided to adopt jump around by kris kross as their favourite tune but we think that's mainly because they get to run around in circles and jump a lot when it is on. Plus it's the only thing they can remember to tell Alexa to play.

I don't know if I hope this is a joke or real?

CherryValanc · 01/09/2020 20:48

Try introducing him to some Christian Rock. I think it's all sign of Christ and pr as y by elective guitar.

Probably won't solve the drum issue mind. Not sure there's any call for harpist in a rock and roll band.

@MrsTerryPratchett

I've been backstage with Marilyn Manson at a Metallica gig. Over 20 bloody years ago which is when this thread was relevant.

Seriously!! I’m not being sarcastic here, I’m jealous!

littlecatfeet · 01/09/2020 21:05

All the kids are into Classic Rock these days. Angry
Yesterday my son asked me "Mum, what's that song that goes 'have you ever seen a woman' " and then he hummed tunelessly at me. Took me ages to work out he meant Rhiannon by Fleetwood Mac! Shock
Don't know where he's picking it up, I blame school.

Lonelycrab · 01/09/2020 21:06

Are you my DH's elderly mother, OP? I didn't think she had Internet. She doesn't believe in that sort of thing either.
