Arghh! Identify this piece of Bach for me!

Help me, oh wise ones. It's driving me nuts.

I think it's a toccata, minor key. I can't remember my music terminology, so please bear with me!

The LH part requires a stretch of an octave or more, because while the thumb carries the tune, it alternates with an off-beat which remains the same bass note over long stretches (changes with the chord).

All I can remember of the tune is that after a twiddle to begin with, it descends the scale slowly for four notes, then back up again for four, then down a minor sixth (maybe!) and works up the scale again.

Can't remember what happens in the RH – maybe it's in fact a fugue and the RH has to do the same... I think I couldn't do the stretch and only ever played the LH part – two-handed.Blush

Um, if you get it from that, you're a miracle worker!

Am now listening my way through Glenn Gould's complete Bach toccatas...

Nice way to spend an afternoon – but what if it's not there?Shock

Oh god I'm an absolute numpty!

I've been listening to the beginning of that famous Toccata and Fugue in D Minor and going, "Nah, not that one."

Duh. It's the start of the second part, at about 2:42.Grin

Thank you thank you!

And I got to spend the afternoon in the melodious company of the glorious Glenn, so win win!

And I think what I described was upside down – the tune is below the repeated off-beat note.

I'm struggling to separate it all out now: my tiny brain is not what it was, and processing Bach is like doing simultaneous equations in your head.Grin
