Does your dd love Billie Eilish?

Mine does!

I really really wanted to like her music too. I was hoping she might be a rare contemporary artist we could agree on. I was heartened by the idea of a teenager going back to the DIY punk ethos. I thought she even had the look of a young (female) Kurt Cobain about her Grin

But I'm sorry, having listened to her, i just find her music and her videos really depressing.

Am I missing something, or is it just that I'm 38 and I'm not supposed to get it?

I’m a smidge older than you and I love her! But I think I never really emotionally matured past sulky teen stage.

cocomelon23 · 18/05/2019 18:50

I'm mid thirties and think she sounds amazing.

RuffleCrow · 18/05/2019 18:51

I've just realised that's probably exactly what my parents said about Nirvana when I was 13 and they were 38!

But at least Nirvana had some energy about them, and some catchy tunes, right? [Old Duffer Emoji]

I literally discovered her this week and love her (in my 30s). Introduced my mum to her last week who really likes her too! Sorry OP Grin music taste is all relative anyway

StealthPolarBear · 18/05/2019 18:53

How can she sound amazing? She never goes above a whisper, except to say DERRRR

BrillyPribble · 18/05/2019 18:53

Yes my DD loves her and I love some of her songs too. I think she's more wry and sarcastic than depressing.

RuffleCrow · 18/05/2019 18:58

I'm with you on that one Stealth. I keep wanting her to let out a Courtney Love style roar.

Because it felt like Courtney, when I was that age, was sort of reclaiming female sexuality from the male gaze, or trying to. Whereas Billie just seems resigned to the pornification?

I love her. See me in the crown is a tune. Shes my fashion inspiration at the moment.

userabcname · 18/05/2019 19:09

I've just discovered her and I love her too! I'm early thirties. I think she's fab.

MrsTerryPratchett · 18/05/2019 19:10

My DH, very old, loves her.

MrsTerryPratchett · 18/05/2019 19:11

He thinks she's 'proper punk'.

DropZoneOne · 18/05/2019 19:11

DD loves her music too, and Alec Benjamin. We share a spotify account so the recommendations are a bit confused Grin

sheshootssheimplores · 18/05/2019 19:13

I’m 44 and I love her music. Not sure if it’s an age thing really, you just like what you like.

RuffleCrow · 18/05/2019 19:14

I'll have to give that one a listen oswin

Definitely agree about the fashion, though. She looks fab.

DD is obsessed. Wasn’t too keen at first but after having it blasting from her room for months i’ve come to (dare i say it) like it!!

Llareggub · 18/05/2019 19:15

My 13 year old son introduced her to me in a "you won't like this" kind of way. I love her. Consequently he has gone off her.

CryHavoc · 18/05/2019 19:16

My 11 yr old absolutely loves her.

NoodlingAlong · 18/05/2019 19:18

My 12-year-old DD loves her. Have been looking to see if she’s touring soon in the UK but seems as though she’s only doing festival gigs. Billie - if you’re reading this Grin - make your way to London soon please!

Persimmonn · 18/05/2019 19:20

Dd 11 loves her too. She draws pictures of her all the time. Never heard any of her songs but she looks well depressed all the time.

StoorieHoose · 18/05/2019 19:25

DD (13) loves her and it's all she listens to. Once you can actually hear what she is singing about I love her music. She has plenty time to grow as an artist and I have high hopes

RuffleCrow · 18/05/2019 19:29

Actually that one's pretty good! Like the video too. I'm easily swayed.

Made me think of Nine Inch Nails, Ministry that sort of thing. Although obviously poppier.

I don't have a daughter but the thread caught my eye, there's a song out at the minute of hers (I think) called 'tough guy' or something, and I hear it about 1674837 times a day at work, I can honestly say, it's one of the worst songs I've ever heard, ever, period. The instrumental bit is like some kind of horrible, awful seizure. I'm 28 and my 19 year old colleague agrees. Not sure what else she sings but Christ, it has to be better than that.

RuffleCrow · 18/05/2019 19:41

Yes, i think it's called Bad Guy and was one of the songs i had in mind when i started the thread. Like bad 90s euro pop with someone whispering over the top.

OP posts:
BrillyPribble · 18/05/2019 20:20

😆I LOVE bad guy! Duh!
She looks like she's having a ball in the video too.

I urge anyone to listen the whole album. It's surprisingly jazzy in places, the writing and production with her brother is genius and so mature given how young they are. They have amazing careers ahead of them.

I think she brings a refreshing blast to the charts and satisfies those who are looking for something different.

I'm 52 and my 14 son rolls his eyes thinking I'm an Emo but then again hasn't listened to the album so I can forgive him for that.

For quickness if you don't want to listen to the whole album, watch to see the other side of the perceived darker image.
