Please help me choose a digital piano! Yamaha or Casio?

Hello,

Ds (almost 8) is taking piano lessons, and dh plays a bit (got to grade 5 as a teen).

We've narrowed our choice down to these, and dh had a little go on the Casio yesterday in a shop. There isn't anywhere nearby for him to try the Yamaha unfortunately.

Casio PX-870

Or

Yamaha YDP-S52

I'm not musical at all. Would a Yamaha hold it's value more? Or are you just paying for a name? It's approx £150 for what looks like the same piano...

Any tips gratefully received!

I have a Yamaha YDP 181 and have had Yamaha's for years. Personally I prefer the sound of them and find the weighted keys a bit more realistic than other brands, but at the end of the day if you children liked the Casio and they play for fun then it'll do just as well I'm sure!

[[https://www.gear4music.com/Keyboards-and-Pianos/DP-6-Digital-Piano-by-Gear4music-and-Accessory-Pack/12SU we got this set, it's a full 88 keyboard

I tried the Yamaha Arius 143 recently and really liked it, and it's cheaper than the Yamaha you've linked to. Would that be worth looking at?

I have a Yamaha Arius and love it.. one of my pupils bought the newer model as they enjoyed learning on it!

My friend has a Yamaha Arius YDP-163 and it's fantastic. We were looking at the 143 but dh preferred the better speakers on the S52?

I've sent the links to ds's piano teacher and he can't see any difference between them apart from the fact the Casio may have slightly louder keys (so might be annoying when he's playing with his headphones plugged in). Not sure that's £150 worth of annoying tho.

I'd rather get a Yamaha as they have a fantastic reputation and are known piano makers, whereas I just think of Casio making keyboards?!

Thanks for all your thoughts so far!

Yamaha for me.

Yes I prefer the Yamaha too - now to convince the husband!

@mummabubs the Casio I linked to has weighted keys too Smile It is just for fun/my son is going to start doing his grades next year and loves playing. At the moment we just have an old large Yamaha keyboard but it doesn't have 88 keys, no pedal, no weighted keys etc.

Argh, dh sounds set on the Casio now, but I'd prefer the Yamaha (name snob?! I just think of calculators when I hear Casio !).
