Mp3 player for kids music

Dd 8 and Ds5 have a lot of CDs, which are always getting lost and scratched. They have a cd player to share but they are now really wanting to listen to their own choices, so I was thinking of copying their CDs to the computer and getting them on an mp3 player each. Quite keen to do this before our summer hols so they can take music with them - but I need advice!

DH has iTunes, but is rather particular about his iTunes account and is not keen to sully it with kids music - so I think I have to start from scratch.

Do I go iTunes, or is there a cheaper /easier alternative for copying the music onto? My phone is Android so I'm open to both. And what mp3 player to buy, I only want the kids to use it for music so maybe something like the old ipod would be better than a smartphone style? Although pictures might make it easier for the 5yr old to select songs if I could work out what model to buy!

My DC are about 5 years older than yours - we subscribe to Spotify family and they pick their own music and listen on their phones. In fact we all do - on our phones and on the home PC. It's definitely worth the subscription!
