I want a book about how symphonies are put together

Can you help? I enjoy listening to symphonies but I have not studied music beyond the first few grades. A friend did once begin telling me how things are composed and what all the different parts are called. I think I would find it interesting but I am at a loss to know where to start. I have read some book reviews but am none the wiser really. I wouldn't mind if it was a book about just one piece of music.

Thankyou

Have a google for the term "sonata form". The first movement of classical & romantic symphonies are often composed to this formula.

Thankyou all very much. My googling had come up with none of those, so your suggestions are very welcome.

britanica.com is a good site, isn't it? I didn't know it before. It will be good for homework for the children, thankyou.
