I love discovering new music and there's so much great music that isn't British or American. Are there any World musicians/ bands you've discovered that you love?

So, to start, I really like Seu Jorge, Ana Carolina, Hindi Zahra, Moroccan Spirit. Anyone got anything they can recommend?

It's not new but I love Manu Chao's proxima estacion esperanza. Love it. There's one song that we used to play in my flat share when we were getting ready for a party. Happy memories.

Dh listens to Miriam makebe and other South African musicians. Love that too but can't remember all the names.

isn't British or American
Irish? Iarla O'Lionard, Martin Hayes, and together in The Gloaming. Ethiopian popular music is great fun - see YouTube for examples.

The second 'i' is missing in O'Lionaird. My apologies to him and anyone who is offended by that.

Lady smith black mambazo of course!

Thanks for the Manu Chao recommendation, just saved it to Spotify and will enjoy listening to that!

This is one of my favourite songs. It's actually a cover version of a famous British song but sounds completely different!

Amadou and Mariam. Malian duo. They are brilliant.

OneofTHOSEWomen · 04/12/2015 21:46

Incidentally, I'm with David Byrne on the term "World Music".

Mayra Andrade

Been to see her twice. She is an amazing musician, knows how to work a crowd, and is so beautiful. Young too!
Destinysdaughter · 04/12/2015 23:02

Don't really want to get into a discussion about semantics, just looking for the sort of music that isn't traditionally played on UK radio stations. Don't know what term to call it but think most people would know what I mean.

William Onyeabor. A funk musician from Nigeria. He's a really great, talented man.

I worked in Holland for the Lockerbie trial and there was a band whose single I bought, can't remember the name of the band but the song was "harden Dan ik he been Dan" or something like that! I loved it!

viviantaylor666 · 24/06/2016 11:12
