What Are Your Thoughts on the New David Bowie Single?

I heard 'Blackstar', the first single to be taken from the album of the same name (due January 2016) for the first time yesterday. I really like it and looking forward to the new album, as I do with all new Bowie releases. From the single, I think we can expect an album with some sort of concept running through it and quite an odd album, possibly in the vein of Scott Walker's 'Tilt' (1995) or 'The Drift' (2006). I think this was the type of sound first hinted at on the 'Sue (or in the Season of Crime)' single but it also puts me in mind of the '1. Outside' (1995) album. Love the video too! Any thoughts?

That he likes them young.

eehhhhh.....

really not sure what to say. I am a huge Bowie fan. But it doesn't do it for me.

Sorry Dave Sad

Hhhmmm, I saw something about that too and desperately do not want to believe it is true Sad There have been that many rumours about him (an affair with Jennifer Connolly that goes back years, etc) that God knows what to believe.

Erm, back to the music ... It is an acquired taste isn't it Jennifer25? I've had to listen to it a few times to get into it but like that he is still attempting to do new things. I think the single will be better understood when it is seen in context with the album. I'm fully expecting something along the lines of Scott Walker's 'Tilt'.

Hmm. I like the tune. Apart from the jazz flute at the end and the goose noise a few minutes in. The video is trying too hard to be weird. Can't quite see it as Christmas number one.

thefutureofpolitics · 20/11/2015 14:28

Yes, agreed about the video, I like it but the 'Heart's Filthy Lesson' video achieved better what I think he was trying to do with this one. Haha, agreed, it would be funny to see it at Christmas number one but would prefer to see this at Christmas number one than an X-Factor song Grin

Oops, I meant to add the 'Heart's Filthy Lesson' video ...

I've now cleaned the bathroom with the song playing in my head, it was an interesting experience. Perhaps David Bowie could shoot an alternative video from the point of view of somebody cleaning their bathroom in marigolds, Smack My B Up-style. Should I write to him?
Seriously though, thus may be agood track to do yoga to. Will check out more Bowie videos when the children are in bed and less at risk of disturbing material on YouTube.

this

LagartijaNick · 20/11/2015 14:54

Argh I've made it bold. This not thus.

thefutureofpolitics · 20/11/2015 15:00

Haha, I love it LagartijaNick!! I think there is definitely a concept album in there somewhere!!! If you want some more 'disturbing' Bowie videos, I suggest the videos from the '1.Outside' and 'Earthling' era.

I'm still trying to erase images from that SciFi film from my mind (The Man Who Fell to Earth?).
And watch this space for my concept album Housework Through the Musical Ages.

thefutureofpolitics · 20/11/2015 17:04

Haha, it could catch on, definitely a road to domestos moment! Oh yeah, I love that film but the bit where he takes his eyes out is horrible! Confused
