Am thinking of giving it a go with my old piano. Is it difficult? What will I need?

Really difficult if you've no experience. Get a tuner out!

HexBramble · 11/10/2015 17:10

I quite fancy the challenge though - I must admit.

Definitely get a tuner it's not like tuning a guitar

Ferguson · 11/10/2015 19:38

You will need the appropriate tool, like a spanner with a long handle, and a set of tuning-forks, and other tools.

These links may help, but bear in mind you could snap strings, warp the frame, and possible render these piano useless:

www.piano-tuning.co.uk/tuning-a-piano/

piano.detwiler.us/

www.dirksprojects.nl/index.php?Lan=english&Page=Tuner/ManualPianoTuning.php

As some of the sites state, YOU DO THIS AT YOUR OWN RISK.

Married to a professional piano tuner here. Don't do it!
We have had to go out to a few pianos after DIY jobs and it costs a lot more in repairs. Broken strings, damaged pins, pins not set correctly etc.... It is not a simple job (DH spent 3 years at college learning how).
Let us know how you get on!!!!

wannaBe · 11/10/2015 20:10

a piano tuner dp here too. :) I already knew the answer but asked him and he said no way - absolutely don't do it yourself or it will cost a fortune to put right the damage that you'll do.

Where abouts are you op?

heheheheheheh · 11/10/2015 20:17

I'd compare the complexity of piano tuning to gallbladder surgery. If you'd be happy to operate on a relative using Google as your guide then perhaps you have the dexterity, intellect and sheer luck to tune a piano competently.

Just out of interest what does it cost, roughly, to get your piano tuned? Never had it done it before but been thinking about it lately.

Izzadoraduncancan · 11/10/2015 21:50

We are not in the UK. I would recommend you look at the pianoforte tuners association website and contact some local tuners accredited by them.
I think price varies quite a bit around the country.

Ok lovely, thanks. Sorry for hijack Op.

HexBramble · 12/10/2015 21:33

Please don't try to do it yourself. It's complicated, piano tuners are professionally trained for several years to do this and there are plenty of specialist equipment that you will not have in your own home to do the job. It's not like replacing a door with a drill and a few screws.
