DH is adamant that sweary songs l, or ones with vaguely racy themes shall never be on around our children.

Now, I don't really want the kids going to school swearing blue murder but my inclination is to just play what I fancy and not worry too much...

The only person I know brought up with prolific swearing is one of the most proper adults I know.

And I think it is our responsibility to offer a wide and varied musical education

What's your policy ?

I don't have anything with loads of swearing or 'adult themes' on around the kids, but tbh I don't really have music on around the kids at all....

There are some songs I certainly wouldn't play around a 3 and 6 year old. At that age, I think swearing is the "worst" but DD is now 8 and is now asking about the lyrics in whatever current song goes "I like it better when we're naked".

I don't worry too much about it.

But I did let DD watch Mama Mia at 2. Well, actually my Mum did, but I've let her watch it since.

Yes. I download radio edits of tracks by kanye west, Jay Z etc.

They're 7 and 5 and I have enough to deal with than dealing with them rattling off 'fucks' and 'shits'.

Although the radio edit for Mama do the hump has a scratchy part that is basically a sneakily included 'fuck it' or fuck you, I can hear it anyway and tend to chat over the intro.

Funnily enough, lots of old Stones and Guns 'n' Roses is ok.

That's a good idea downloading radio edits. It's kanye west I have been wanting to play as it happens :)

I think it depends if you would be happy for your child to go around singing that song at school. DD, 6, repeats lots of what she hears on the radio, often gets the words hilariously wrong, but even so I wouldn't go playing uncensored versions of some of the stuff, personally.

That said, you can't censor the world at large and some songs do make for interesting conversations, e.g. we had an age-appropriate discussion about attitudes to women when explaining why I have changed the radio station over when "Smack That" by Akon caught me unawares.

Wouldn't occur to me to edit. I can remember my young DCs favourite song being the Libs 'what a waster'. And my then 9yo being massively into M&M at around the time of his first album.
