Why are women less into music than men?

Massive generalisation I know - and I'm hoping to stand corrected but its struck me recently that I know very few women in RL who are as into music as I am. For me my record collection is one if my most precious things after my family and I actually realise I get a bit depressed if I spend more than a day or so without firing up iTunes. But I never meet women like me - friends will confess to likening music at which point my heart leaps only to be dashed when they admit that the last album they bought was a George Michael
'best of' in the 90's. DH however is always swapping music with mates at work and is an inspiration in tracking down new and exciting stuff. Surely being a music geek is not predominately a male preserve is it??

Although, granted, I am the only girl in a group of people from work that I regularly go to gigs with..... I think it just depends on your workplace.

I am the biggest music geek I know.

iTunes/iPod, Youtube, music channel. Every day.
Music is life. I could give up Tv but never music.

oh no.....i absolutely live for my music collection and am very much in love with it all!

both me and dh have very similarly ecclectic tastes - in the car right now i have the new jack white album - blunderbus... rattlesnakes by lloyd cole and the commotions....the best of Neilson and rubber soul by the beatles.

we have had to buy wall to wall shelving units to house our music collection and we have a loft full of vinyl! everything from the dead kennedys and the fall to jazz and miles davis! from folk - the unthanks to punk - the sex pistols!

we love our music. we have eclectic and individual tastes - i am a 40 year old woman and i dont find many women who listen to what i do but it doesnt bother me!

My SIL reviews new releases for her local radio station. I've not met another woman so interested in music as her either.

Can you all come and move into my street please? Pref with speakers up to 11 and windows open

I'm music obsessed too, music totally influences and changes my mood.

I admit to being slightly more obsessive than most people I know, male or female but I try to surround myself - as much as I can - with like minded people.

The older I get the harder it is to find like minded people though. People seem to increasingly like silence, whereas I need my music louder, probably because I'm going deaf from hanging around speakers too much at gigs!

I am obsessed with music - it is a massive part of my life! I also have little/no interest in celebs/soaps/xfactor/makeup and other 'girlie' stuff so find I get on much better with men in general.

It's a real shame that the vast majority of women aren't really into music

Music is my life, I play professionally and teach, plus constant soundtrack (have you got Jango? It's a brilliant app for finding new stuff.

I don't know any other women my age with kids who are as into it as I am, and only one or two young ones. It's a very male thing. And women tend to sing if anything, rather than playing. Odd.

The only person who I know who is obsessively into music, and knows every factoid about every band ever (she was most awesome company at the IOW Festival!), is both a woman and an MNer.

I'm a music geek. My iTunes is my favourite and most valuable possession.

I'm the music fanatic in this house. I remember the day when I was 15 and found Pink Floyds Relics in my dads record collection. Interstellar Overdrive blew me away.

Thats not true at all.If 72 is your year of birth though then Im younger.Most of my friends use ipods daily and youtube. I think its weird you dont know women really into music as most are in rl ime.

I am 47 with two kids.
I have been going to gigs since I was 12.
This year I have seen Joe Bonamassa, Killing Joke, Garbage, Throwing Muses amongst a few + loads of lesser known ones.

I have over 5000+ tracks on my iPod.

When I was younger I was only in two heay rock and metal but now have a slightly more open mind - although I will never ever like jazz, reggae or motown!
I listen to Zane Lowe on R1 and Planet Rock.

My head is like a permament juke box with songs alway there.

I have just discovered Rodriguez after seeing Seaching for Sugar Man and have got tickets to see him in December. I have also got tickets to see Example and getting my Plan B tickets tomorrow.

I love music, I always have. I was brought up listening to my parents records, and the radio. I can't go anywhere without my headphones and quite often embarrass myself by getting into the music and singing along or playing air guitar walking down the road!

But none of my friends are really into it. I'd love to go to more gigs, but although I've been on my own before I feel a bit like a sad loner going alone.

I do have a friend on facebook that I met on another forum that's really into music and we are going to a couple of gigs together, but she lives up north and I'm down south so it's not something we can do regularly.

I wake up to music. I work to music. I fall asleep to music. And whenever poss listen to music on the tv. Couldnt function without music.

I love my music collection! Many of my female friends are not 'into' the same things as me, so I mostly talk music with the boys. I do try to move with the times and keep up with current stuff, but at the moment, I'm not hearing a lot I'm liking.

I would go to gigs but DH often works evenings and we don't have a babysitter often, so that's not happening for a while. :(

I am a complete music geek as are many of my female friends. I love going to gigs, have worked in the music industry and play several instruments. DP is less of a music freak but likes some great stuff like really old original Ska.

I too am music mad, i still own every Vinyl single and album i ever bought, as well as a huge collection of tapes. I will never get rid of them, as i consider them to be as important (if not more) as photos.

My DSs are music obsessed too, DS2 spends at least an hour a day drumming by choice, and DS1 has a 1st Class degree from the Institute of Modern Music.

At 49 i'm getting slightly perturbed that i have no one my own age to rave about the likes of The Black Keys to, or anyone who can remember The Sneaker Pimps

I couldn't imagine life without music - wake up to Shaun Keaveney, xfm on the radio downstairs, CDs in the car, iPod on phone permanently on at work (much to my fellow civil servants' amusement) and had my old iPod on the speaker this evening for a bit of a dance with DS. XP -never- rarely listened to music, so since he's gone, it's like a new dawn in our house! I love reading pitchfork and getting something new downloaded - and follow lots of interesting music people on twitter. But none of my female friends IRL (bar one who now lives in Norway!) are as into it.

I'm another music obsessive who happens to be female, & i've often wondered the same thing.

I think as a general rule there is some truth to it. By pure co-incidence, i'm also bisexual & with men, i've always found music the key to really connecting with a man i fancy the pants off (think High Fidelity). I've tried this approach with women i'm interested in & generally hit a bit of a wall when they reel off a list of 'stuff to dance to' on a night out. Obviously this rule wouldn't apply to anyone on this thread!
