Would really appreciate some advice from any songwriters or music people generally. I've never written a song before, and really don't completely know what I'm doing. No idea if I could ever write another, but I do have on my hands a completed, coherent song which I think is actually not all that bad. I've played it to a few friends and my music class, and the plan is to enter it into a local talent competition, purely for the fun of the experience.
I am not mad enough to think I'm going to make any money or become famous or anything like that, but I am wondering how to take this forward. Should I register copyright somewhere or is this a waste of money? Should I be trying to perform it lots/little/none at all? If I did write more and started to imagine myself to be a songwriter, what would be the next step? (Partly I am asking this because a few friends are advising me to do things that I think would be the wrong thing to do - e.g. one who apparently knows someone very very famous and has offered to send my song to him! Seems like total lunacy to me, so I'd like to know what to do instead...)
Eek...
