New Leonard Cohen Album "Old Ideas" - he still is masterful at 76

I picked this up tonight as DH's surprise Easter present (well I needed an excuse or did I?). I listened to it in the car on the way home and got so drawn into it that I went for a very enjoyable detour that took me 40 mins out of my way just Lenny and me in the country lanes (!)

My favourite tracks so far are "Amen" which just oozes along and "Darkness" which is a jazz blues song which is very well "danceable" iykwim.
Anyone else listening to it - wold love to hear your thoughts.

I will get it and let you know.....love him Smile

OrenishI · 06/04/2012 22:32

I've just sent away for Old Ideas so haven't heard it yet. Am a huge fan of the genius of Leonard Cohen. Saw him in concert twice in 2010 and it was something very, very special.

winnybella · 06/04/2012 22:33

Oooh, I have to get it. He'll be performing in my town in September, for the third time in the last few years, I'm not going to miss it this time.

I love him. The lyrics are brilliant as well, aren't they? I'm really fond of Avalanche, Teachers, Dress Rehearsal Rag, Blue Raincoat, Waltz in Vienna, So Long Marianne, Waiting for Miracle (how perfect is that?)...oh, so many.

Will deffo get this one, thanks for telling us!

SwedishEdith · 06/04/2012 22:37

You've reminded me to buy it now. Also saw him twice in 2010. I love him.

BonnieBumble · 06/04/2012 22:52

I thought he died a couple of years ago. Obviously not. Blush

Tranquilidade · 06/04/2012 22:59

My DB got me a ticket to go in 2010 then I was ill, am still devastated

ninah · 06/04/2012 23:01

I love Leonard! I shall listen

microcosmia · 06/04/2012 23:51

There are some tracks from the new album uploaded on You Tube if anyone wants to check them out. I'm using mobile bb here and for some reason when I try to post a link the page freezes.

Tranquilidade I am gutted for you that you missed the concert. He is doing another world tour and coming to these parts in the Autumn. Maybe you might catch him then? I saw him twice, 1 indoor gig and 1 outdoor (the now legendary Kilmainham gig in Dublin where he recently admitted to having to conceal that he and the guitarist were moved to tears in response to the warmth of the crowd!) . The event was like a spiritual experience and I don't say that lightly. He really communicates with the audience - you do feel he's speaking and singing on a personal level to you. His band are superb, everyone of them. He's humble and generous and just lovely. There are few like him.

Anthem is my all time favourite but I love Avalanche, Gypsy Wife, Sisters of Mercy and the Partisan. Each one is perfection in itself.

listening and loving it.....wish I could go to see him but too complicated! Wish he would come to Scotland.

whatkungfuthat · 12/04/2012 10:16

Keep forgetting to get it, I will definitely buy it tomorrow when I'm shopping

upahill · 15/04/2012 16:00

I have listened to this and I'm not loving it all.

Mrsrobertduvall · 15/04/2012 16:03

Saw him at the Albert Hall in the eighties and he was magnificent.
If I wasn't mrsrobertduvall I wold be mrsleonardcohen.

bonnieslilsister · 15/04/2012 16:55

Not if I got to him first Mrsrobertduvall

CoteDAzur · 15/04/2012 17:00

Love him. I saw him several years ago in a small concert hall in Monaco. He wasn't moving much but was great as ever.

Mrsrobertduvall · 15/04/2012 18:35

Lol he wasn't moving much.

I obviously have a penchant for very old men.

QuiteOldGal · 15/04/2012 22:30

Woohoo, just booked tickets for Hop farm, Sept 8th.

Mrsrobertduvall · 16/04/2012 12:06

I would love to go but can't big crowds especially outdoors.
Let's hope he keeps going till Sept!!!!

ElectricSoftParade · 16/04/2012 12:19

QuiteOldGal Me too! Booked them last night and have been on a high since then! I am so excited about seeing him. Wanted to see him when he played Brighton a few years ago but all the tickets went in a snap. The touts were offering them for £250+ and I couldn't afford that.

I saw this advertised last night and was whining talking to DH about how sad I was about not seeing him. DH booked the tickets and then surprised me! Oh man, I am not usually so gushy but WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!

leximark · 24/04/2012 13:00

I don't find anything masterful about Leonard Cohen at all!! I've tried to be fair but no!!! Grin

whatkungfuthat · 24/04/2012 15:34

I didn't 'get' him for years, and I can see how he is a bit like marmite for some.

dinkydoodah · 25/04/2012 19:26

Oooh my favourite all time singer! Saw him in Manchester in 2010, was like a spiritual experience. Didn't expect I would ever get to see him so was a bit overwhelmed but he was just amazing. Can't quite explain why it was so fantastic, there is something very special about Leanord though. Poetry!

dinkydoodah · 25/04/2012 19:28

Leonard!! Oops Blush

ElectricSoftParade · 25/04/2012 19:44

PONCE ALERT!

For a long short while in my late teens, just after I had left home and moved to Brighton, I wore mainly black and accessorised by carrying a silm volume of Leonard's poems. I would whip it out and pose read it everywhere.

Happily, I keep most of my ponce-like behaviour indoors now. Blush

whatkungfuthat · 25/04/2012 22:22

I've got one of his books of poems, but I don't carry it about although I do have the complete works of Robert Burns on my phone I do mainly wear black though

coffeeinbed · 26/04/2012 19:14

I love Going Home from the new album.
Saw him in the Albert Hall couple of years ago.
