Now I've got mixed feelings about covers and samples.
For example I love Robert Plants version of 'If I were a carpenter' while my colleague prefers Johhny Cash's neither of those did the original.
I prefer the original of 'Hurt' by NIN but I also love Johnny Cash's
Now with sampling for a long time I didn't like it and would mutter under my breath things like ' can't they come up with anything original' but then realised that often samplling can offer the opportunity for new discovery. I've watched my son love Eminiem and discover Aerosmith through samples same with listening to Prof Green and finding INXS.
Another cover 'Don't stop believin' by hte dreadful Glee cast renewed an interest in Boston - whether that is a good thing or not is down to personal taste I guess.
I'm guessing there is going to be a reawaking of Human League now that Glee have released 'Don't you want me'
I used to love the mash ups on MTV where they combined two videos of artists that you wouldn't put together. My favourite one was Just because by Jane's addiction spliced with Shakira's wherever.
Certainly covers and samples have made me uncover music that was new to me.
My problem is when covers are done badly or covered excatly the same where the artist hasn't brought anything new to the song.
Another favourite cover is Jealous guy by John Lennon. When John Lennon sings it it feels like he is bearing his soul, when Bryan Ferry sings it it feels wistful and full of regret. Slight difference but a great cover.
God I'm waffling now!!
