where you put in your favourite music (eg bar italia by pulp IMO) and then it comes up with suggestions that you might like based on other people's record collections?

I don't think it is quite what you're thinking but Last Fm is a very similar radio station.

You can either put in your favourite artist or group and it will play continously bands of the same genre or you can type in a style of music eg industrial metal, jazz, whatever and it will play music of that type.
It will tell you the name of the artist, song and cd that it from and also give a biography of the band.

Try Gnoosic.com

there used to be a better site but I can't remember the name of it for the life of me. Will come back and tell you if I remember!

Lastfm kind of does this, like upahill says; you're not thinking of Genius on iTunes are you?

stainesmassif · 18/01/2011 22:12

I couldn't make last fm work! Blush Genius on iTunes only works on the music you've already got, doesn't it?

staines..

get the lastfm website up
Along the red band running across the screen there are a few options music, radio, events.

click radio

This opens a window with a box in that says something like type in artist.
This is where you type in something like Boomtown Rats or Goth rock or whatever you like.

It can take a minute or so to load.

If you make a profile it will be quicker next time. It alsokeeps a list of stuff you have listened to.

HTH.

Spotify? it also sounds like Shazam which is an app for ipad etc.

upahill · 19/01/2011 09:37

I love Shazam!

Sometimes when I'm out and here a song that I can't quite place or have not yet downloaded I use Shazam to keep a note of it until I rememeber to download later.

"Genius on iTunes only works on the music you've already got, doesn't it?"

Oh yeah. Blush
It rummages out the under-listened to stuff thatI'd forgotten I had Grin

Or: I have seen people on here start threads; 'I like X,Y and Z, who else should I listen to?'... then use spotify to check out recommendations.

stainesmassif · 19/01/2011 20:00

Grin heathen. maybe i'll start one of those threads, am a bit shy about scrutinising my music taste as it's stuck in the early 90's!

staines....
Did you get lastfm up and running?

Hey no shame in music of the early 90's.....
You do mean Nirvana, Pearl Jam, Alice in Chains, Jane's Addiction, cramps, pixies didn't you?

(hope so......they were the early 90's(and late 80's) for me!)

stainesmassif · 20/01/2011 16:58

yes, used it last night, v impressive.

the pixies, yesssssss, but other than that i was a bit more of a britpop fan - pulp, sleeper, suede, blur, the bluetones, supergrass - and i seem stuck at the age of approximately 24 and a half. unfortunately i'm 39 today. where did 14 and a half years disappear to??
