Can you recommand some new music for me?

I am not a very musical person at all and have quite a limited range and taste, but I've reached the stage where I'm fed up with playing my albums and feel ready to branch out into something different.

I really like melodic, literate pop. My favourite artists are Lloyd Cole, the Divine Comedy, the Beautiful South. I also like Vampire Weekend and some Madonna and Robbie Williams (my DH who is a prog-rock fan is horrifed!)

I don't like: heavy music, really long songs (blush), guitar solos, inane lyrics, lack of strong melody.

Can anyone recommend some new artists or even individual songs for me to try on Spotify?

Thank you.

Mumford and Sons Album-Sigh No More, I cannot stop playing it in my car, it's amazing. Takes a good few listens but worth it.

Belle and Sebastian?

tummytickler · 12/12/2010 00:13

One of my favourite bands is The Agnostic Mountain Gospel Choir.
They are utterly amazing, yet nobody seems to have heard of them. Please give them a listen Grin.
I saw them live and they were amazing, stayed to chat to the fans, best show i have ever seen, enjoyed them more than the Rolling Stones, Pearl Jam etc.

Camera Obscura... One of their songs is even a little tribute to Lloyd Cole.

In fact

Have you encountered My Life Story? Always on the verge of mega-stardom in the 90s, never quite made it.

You may like Geneva and Rialto as well. And Luke Haines's two bands The Auteurs and Black Box Recorder.

A very under-rated band is Marillion - you can get a free download/cd sampler of some of their stuff here -

www.marillion.com

Mumford & Sons, Keane, Coldplay, REM, all great, good lyrics, etc.

SkylineDrifter · 12/12/2010 00:18

Ooh, just remembered - Marah - great, little-known, American band - www.marah-usa.com/

UnquietDad · 12/12/2010 00:28

If the OP's DH is a prog-rocker she probably has heard some Marillion... although (and this may be heresy) I prefer their more accessible early Steve Hogarth period stuff to either the Fish era or the more recent material (what I've heard of it).

UnquietDad · 12/12/2010 00:31

I wonder how a bit of would go down...?

lovelyopaque · 12/12/2010 16:32

Marillion do love their long sons too...

Batteryhuman · 12/12/2010 21:35

Stornoway, The Leisure Society, Beth Jeans Houghton, Goldheart Assembly

JebusBuiltMyCoolSled · 14/12/2010 04:28

The Eels

upahill · 14/12/2010 11:02

If you are going to have a look at Marillion I would suggest the Fish era. I fact Fish's solo stuff is worth a listen.

about his doomed romance with Heather Findley.

[[http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-Zu0bvLU2BI&feature=related view from a hill] is also worth a listen.
