Sling or no sling

So, I have nerve damage in my neck and my arm has very little control. I feel self conscious when it just hangs down so I wear a sling. My physio says I should stop wearing it as it causes muscle waste in the shoulder. But I am vain self conscious, and think people will stare. If anyone else has a dangly arm, do you still use a sling?
