Hi,
I got things rolling almost 3 years ago when I first spoke to my gp about my suspicions of possibly being autistic. I've started to feel really quite anxious over the past few days and was wondering if I have to do much preparation? (I haven't yet written anything down but will later) Apparently it can last up to 2 hours which is such a long time to talk to anyone about myself! It would be great to hear some positive stories about assessments that have gone well Smile

My son (10) had his today online. It was lovely. I found it really positive and the doctor was really warm and supportive. I felt really good about it and that it's progress towards my son having a better understanding of himself and others understanding him.

Ours was 2 hours but didn't feel too long. They spoke to ds for a while first and then me. It was lots of questions with some scenarios and I didn't do any preparation really. I suppose maybe just reflect on what you want out of the process.

Oh and to check how the link works as I had to download an app.

Honestly, it'll be ok. Hope it goes wellFlowers

My assessment was quite a long time ago now, so it could well be different now. I can't remember how long it was but I know I had a break half way through where I got to go outside which was good. Also I remember one of the people (was about 4 in the room) getting me to put cards in order to make a story, then asking me about the emotions of the people in them etc.

I'll have a think about what else I can remember, but happy to answer any questions.

Mine went well, they were very reassuring. There was one quite surreal moment where she went outside and got a small bag of sensory toys which she tipped onto the table and then we both just looked at each other. Still got no idea what that was about. Mine was ADOS and it was fine, and overall it has been a huge positive in my life.

I hope the appointment went well. The only advice I usually give people is to write down any questions you have in your phone notes, as often you can forget on the day and leave and then remember the minute you get home!

Sorry to jump on thread, @Windywuss please can you let me know your thoughts about the assessment online? My son has his next week adn I am nervous it wont be very thorough or accurate as I am not sure how they can carry out the play and social communication via video, but it has been so long waiting i am obviously grabbing this appointment with both hands.

Windywuss · 13/10/2021 21:12

@danijeanne hello. I got the bat signal through email!

I can only speak for my experience but it was great. Lovely kind doctor who was absolutely fantastic with my son. Spent probably 20 mins tops talking to him and then rest of time with me. Asked loads of questions. Explained process well. Just totally positive.

The report recommended other specialists to go into school. One has been already and that went fine. She rang me afterwards and was again, absolutely lovely.

I had same doubts as you but it went far better than I feared. Let me know how it goes Flowers

danijeanne · 13/10/2021 21:52

Ah sounds really positive thank you for letting me know. I was just so concerned they wouldn’t be able to pick anything up via video. I’ll let you know how it goes!

Windywuss · 13/10/2021 21:59

Yes, i had same concerns but it worked fine for us. Keep fingers crossed for you
