This feedback thread is for the 250 Mumsnetters, who have participated in the Colgate® Maximum Cavity Protection plus Sugar Acid Neutraliser™ toothpaste product test with their DCs.

Here’s what Colgate says: “Did you know that 84% of children and all adults suffer from cavities at some point in their life*?

“Cavities, also known as tooth decay, are the most common chronic disease on the planet.
But cavities are preventable and this is why Colgate® has created a breakthrough new anti-cavity toothpaste called Colgate® Maximum Cavity Protection plus Sugar Acid NeutraliserTM.

“Providing close to double protection against early decay**, Colgate® Maximum Cavity Protection is the first and only toothpaste to contain Sugar Acid NeutraliserTM technology, that goes beyond the protection of fluoride, neutralising sugar acids in plaque – the #1 cause of cavities.

“Colgate’s Head of Scientific Affairs, Foti Panagakos comments:
“More and more we’re aware of the increasing levels of sugar in our diets and the negative impact this has on our health. The need for a toothpaste with built in Sugar Acid Neutraliser™ technology has never been so urgent. Colgate® Maximum Cavity Protection plus Sugar Acid Neutraliser™ will have a tremendous impact on the oral health of the nation.””

Q1. What was your overall impression of Colgate® Maximum Cavity Protection plus Sugar Acid Neutraliser™ toothpaste?
Nice packaging, like the purple colour on the tube, not minty enough for my liking though.
Q2. Would you replace your regular toothpaste with Colgate® Maximum Cavity Protection plus Sugar Acid Neutraliser™ toothpaste?
I would try to get it if it was on offer, as the full price is more than I would spend on a toothpaste normally.
Q3. What did your DCs like most about Colgate® Maximum Cavity Protection plus Sugar Acid Neutraliser™ Kids toothpaste (such as taste, texture, packaging)?
My 8yr old has been happy to use it, no complaints re taste, texture. He liked the packaging. My 4yr old didn't like the taste, he found it a bit strong but then again he can take a while to get used to changes in toothpaste!
Q4. Would you recommend Colgate® Maximum Cavity Protection plus Sugar Acid Neutraliser™ to other parents?
I would yes.

Sizzlesthedog · 01/04/2015 10:27

Q1. What was your overall impression of Colgate® Maximum Cavity Protection plus Sugar Acid Neutraliser™ toothpaste?

good taste! clean feeling and foamed up more than any other toothpaste I've used. That makes it feel like they've had a good clean. I haven't seen it advertised or in shops yet, good concept. I think we all are concerned with the effect of sugar on our teeth.

Q2. Would you replace your regular toothpaste with Colgate® Maximum Cavity Protection plus Sugar Acid Neutraliser™ toothpaste?

depending on price. I think I would

Q3. What did your DCs like most about Colgate® Maximum Cavity Protection plus Sugar Acid Neutraliser™ Kids toothpaste (such as taste, texture, packaging)?

liked the purple packaging and the fact it was the same as the adult version. Taste was "wonderful"

Q4. Would you recommend Colgate® Maximum Cavity Protection plus Sugar Acid Neutraliser™ to other parents?

yes, if it came up in conversation

LittleMissRayofHope · 01/04/2015 11:46

Thanks for free samples!

Q1. What was your overall impression of Colgate® Maximum Cavity Protection plus Sugar Acid Neutraliser™ toothpaste?

Quite good. We all liked the taste, although I would have preferred it to be a little stronger. I like my toothpaste to be a strong minty flavour, almost menthol instead of mint. Long lasting.
I love the concept. Dd eats a tonne of fruit and it can be a struggle to get her to brush twice a day minimum so the extra assurance from this toothpaste is good for my peace of mind!

Q2. Would you replace your regular toothpaste with Colgate® Maximum Cavity Protection plus Sugar Acid Neutraliser™ toothpaste?

If it was similar prices to current products then yes I would.

Q3. What did your DCs like most about Colgate® Maximum Cavity Protection plus Sugar Acid Neutraliser™ Kids toothpaste (such as taste, texture, packaging)?

Dd loved the colour, seemed to find it hilarious to have a purple tube!
Also she loved that she had a nice miniature tube like mummies!! She wasnt very vocal about the flavour.

Q4. Would you recommend Colgate® Maximum Cavity Protection plus Sugar Acid Neutraliser™ to other parents?

I think I would, yes. Also to child free friends.

Thislittlekitten · 01/04/2015 15:40

Overall impression was I liked the packaging. I know that's been mentioned a few times but the purple packaging made it look bright and different. The concept was good and generally I did like it.

I think I wouldn't replace my regular toothpaste with it as the flavour wasn't strong enough for me. Perhaps if different flavour came out I would consider it.

My DD didn't like her tube. She thought it was to strong for her and the texture chalky.

I would recommend it as I thought it was good and I liked the idea behind it.

Caillou · 01/04/2015 15:47

Q1. What was your overall impression of Colgate® Maximum Cavity Protection plus Sugar Acid Neutraliser™ toothpaste?

The packaging was nice and different from others but the taste wasn't what I and my daughter are used to, which made toothbrushing much more difficult with my daughter (3) despite purple being her favourite color Grin

Q2. Would you replace your regular toothpaste with Colgate® Maximum Cavity Protection plus Sugar Acid Neutraliser™ toothpaste?

I might for myself assuming that I get used to the taste, but I wouldn't for my daughter simply based on the taste.

Q3. What did your DCs like most about Colgate® Maximum Cavity Protection plus Sugar Acid Neutraliser™ Kids toothpaste (such as taste, texture, packaging)?

It was the packaging that got her excited the most, she was really positive at first but then a massive meltdown occurred as soon as we brushed her teeth as the taste wasn't good she said

Q4. Would you recommend Colgate® Maximum Cavity Protection plus Sugar Acid Neutraliser™ to other parents?

I am sorry but I may recommend it for adults but warn the parents about the taste of the kids one

MrsTom · 01/04/2015 16:30

Q1. What was your overall impression of Colgate® Maximum Cavity Protection plus Sugar Acid Neutraliser™ toothpaste?

I really didn't like the toothpaste - it had a really funny taste that I haven't got used to. Also, I think it is too expensive.

Q2. Would you replace your regular toothpaste with Colgate® Maximum Cavity Protection plus Sugar Acid Neutraliser™ toothpaste?

No (for the reasons above).

Q3. What did your DCs like most about Colgate® Maximum Cavity Protection plus Sugar Acid Neutraliser™ Kids toothpaste (such as taste, texture, packaging)?

My children didn't like the toothpaste at all. My youngest (aged 6) only used it once then refused to try it again as it tasted 'bad'. They did like the purple colour of the tube though.

Q4. Would you recommend Colgate® Maximum Cavity Protection plus Sugar Acid Neutraliser™ to other parents?

No (again for the reasons given above).

KathrynMumsnet · 01/04/2015 16:35

Hi Mumsnetters,

Thank you for all your comments, they are great! Keep them coming!

We have noticed that a couple of questions have been recurring so we passed them onto Colgate.

  1. "I was discussing this with DH last night. Is sugar acid neutraliser actually necessary in toothpaste? Given that advice is you shouldn't brush your teeth for at least an hour after eating, would most of the sugar not be naturally neutralised already by your saliva? (more than prepared to be told I'm wrong on that assumption)"

Colgate says:
"Here is a quote from our scientific advisor:
You are right if the paste itself was acting as a buffer, but the Sugar acid neutraliser technology is left in place as a food substance for those bacteria that produce a base as their waste product instead of acid. As and when an acid producing bacteria eats sugar (from our diet) and releases acid, this is neutralised. Over time, less acid producing bacteria would favour that particular site, so the enamel is protected and at lesser risk of damage from cavity forming bacteria. In other words - Colgate Maximum Cavity Protection plus Sugar Acid Neutralizer™ fights cavities in two ways. The fluoride works on the tooth surface to prevent demineralization and enhance re-mineralization to help strengthen the tooth. The Sugar Acid Neutralizer™ in the form of Arginine works on plaque bacteria, the primary cause of caries, to fight/neutralize acids formed from sugars. This formulation based on Arginine + Fluoride provides superior cavity protection to toothpaste with fluoride alone because it covers both aspects of the caries process."

  1. "Was a little unsure why the childrens one is half the size, yet looks like it contains the same ingredients and fluoride??"

and

  1. "I am curious why there is a kids version as the ingredients seemed to be the same (although in a very slightly different order so perhaps to change the taste slightly?) But the packaging for the adult says it's suitable for children. I, personally prefer to just have 1 tube of toothpaste open for the whole family so found the smaller 'kids' tube a bit unnecessary."

Colgate says:
"We have created a childrens version of Colgate Maximum Cavity Protection because young children need some time to get accustomed to mint flavoured toothpaste. While the childrens version of Colgate Maximum Cavity Protection contains the same technology and offers the same protection as the adult version, it has a milder mint flavour appealing more to young children's (3+ yo) taste."

Best wishes,

Kathryn

That's interesting, I will have to try the children's one now because DD1 had the same complaint about the flavour as I had for the adult paste.

PuzzleRocks · 02/04/2015 08:06

Would Colgate be prepared to comment on the price?

Michelle1985 · 02/04/2015 10:53

Q1. What was your overall impression of Colgate® Maximum Cavity Protection plus Sugar Acid Neutraliser™ toothpaste?
i thought the toothpaste was great! From the packaging to the taste, everything. My kids thought so too!

Q2. Would you replace your regular toothpaste with Colgate® Maximum Cavity Protection plus Sugar Acid Neutraliser™ toothpaste?

  • Yes, I tend to buy what is on offer, however, we really enjoyed the 'fresh all day' feeling from this toothpaste.

Q3. What did your DCs like most about Colgate® Maximum Cavity Protection plus Sugar Acid Neutraliser™ Kids toothpaste (such as taste, texture, packaging)?

For my children, they often struggle with the overpowering taste of many other toothpastes. However, this toothpaste was spot on. Each of my three seem to have found new momentum in their brushing routine and I think this is mainly down to the taste and the 'pretty' packaging!

Q4. Would you recommend Colgate® Maximum Cavity Protection plus Sugar Acid Neutraliser™ to other parents?

Yes absolutely.

rlouisa · 02/04/2015 11:25

. What was your overall impression of Colgate® Maximum Cavity Protection plus Sugar Acid Neutraliser™ toothpaste?i was actually excited about this toothpaste, i could see the difference in my kids teeth just in the first 2 mins of brushing. this is amazing and tastes good
Q2. Would you replace your regular toothpaste with Colgate® Maximum Cavity Protection plus Sugar Acid Neutraliser™ toothpaste? most defintely, when i find a product that does the job, i do stick with it. so this is my new toothpaste

Q3. What did your DCs like most about Colgate® Maximum Cavity Protection plus Sugar Acid Neutraliser™ Kids toothpaste (such as taste, texture, packaging)? they like the minty taste and they like the result, my DC loves the chart which she religiously completed

Q4. Would you recommend Colgate® Maximum Cavity Protection plus Sugar Acid Neutraliser™ to other parents? most defintely. its the newest toothpaste in town. i do hope a senstive one will come out soon.

bearcub1 · 02/04/2015 11:50

Q1. What was your overall impression of Colgate® Maximum Cavity Protection plus Sugar Acid Neutraliser™ toothpaste?
I liked the purple colour of the tube and the shape of the tube. I didn't like the twist cap, as sometimes I found that the tube would twist around when taking the cap on and off and I would have to straighten the tube out before using.

Q2. Would you replace your regular toothpaste with Colgate® Maximum Cavity Protection plus Sugar Acid Neutraliser™ toothpaste?
Looking at the price point, I probably wouldn't, unless I saw it on special offer. My son liked the taste of the paste.

Q3. What did your DCs like most about Colgate® Maximum Cavity Protection plus Sugar Acid Neutraliser™ Kids toothpaste (such as taste, texture, packaging)?
He liked the taste, he is not keen on really minty products and really dislikes mint. I have been looking for a mild mint toothpaste for him, so this was good for him.

Q4. Would you recommend Colgate® Maximum Cavity Protection plus Sugar Acid Neutraliser™ to other parents?
I would recommend it to others.

DinosaursStillEggsist · 02/04/2015 12:00
  1. Overall I liked using this toothpaste and liked that I could rely on its quality given the name on the packaging. The sugar acid neutralizing is a great concept for a family like ours that consumes a fair amount of fruit.
  2. Yes, I like the clean feeling I was left with and the taste were both pleasing.
  3. The children, particularly the 10yo, didn't want to use our adult toothpaste for once as the packaging didn't seem childish. It was also a taste that they didn't mind, likewise the texture wasn't an issue to them.
  4. Yes. Many of my friends feed their children fruit for snacking on over sweets so I think they would appreciate thi. too
gemima27 · 02/04/2015 12:05

I really like the look and smell of the toothpaste, love the purple which is differnt to other brands.
I vary toothpaste depending what is on offer, so will buy if it's on offer.
Little one hated the taste, ran off with her tongue out and wanted water!!!! Think she over played it as she saw the boxes were the same and thought it was adult toothpaste!
I would recommend it, as I am impressed with the adult version, my teeth feel cleaner. However, would advise people maybe not buy the children's at the same time if you have previous told children not to use adult toothpaste...

RugBugs · 02/04/2015 12:52

Q1. What was your overall impression of Colgate® Maximum Cavity Protection plus Sugar Acid Neutraliser™ toothpaste?

Positive. The packaging stood out and the tube is a nice shape.

Q2. Would you replace your regular toothpaste with Colgate® Maximum Cavity Protection plus Sugar Acid Neutraliser™ toothpaste?

No but only because I like to have one tube the whole family can use, too much faff to have separate for the toddler.

Q3. What did your DCs like most about Colgate® Maximum Cavity Protection plus Sugar Acid Neutraliser™ Kids toothpaste (such as taste, texture, packaging)?

My daughter liked the taste and loved that it didn't foam too much in her mouth.

Q4. Would you recommend Colgate® Maximum Cavity Protection plus Sugar Acid Neutraliser™ to other parents?

Yes.

Nelc3 · 02/04/2015 14:13

Q1

I liked the toothpaste (adults one). I also liked the packaging. Modern look. We currently use Colgate Total and I was a bit apprehensive as to whether this would match up to it. I have quite good teeth and I intend on keeping it that way so I really like to make sure the toothpaste I use protects my teeth and my childrens teeth. I want my whole family to have good teeth.

The taste was good, I didn't feel it was a too harsh on the teeth or too minty. My squeaky clean test after brushing was still there, maybe not as squeaky as normal though.

My two children has different responses. My youngest really liked it. He said "mama I didn't like mint before but I like it now". My eldest (5 year old) didnt like the taste but recalled liked the grown up packaging and look.

Q2. If the price was right, we would.

Q3. Mixed reactions. One liked it and the other didnt. The liked the packaging. I didn't think the screw on lid was attractive or practical. It's takes longer to screw back on (especially when rushing in the morning and the kids want to do it and take forever to the the lid back on!). Also when you are rushing its easier with a flip top and much easier to get toothpaste on your toothbrush one handed rather than two.

Q4. If the price was right and they had issues with clean teeth then I would. I do think Total is great though, and it make take some persuading to get ppl from using that.

Sizzlesthedog · 02/04/2015 15:03

Can I ask the price? I haven't seen it for sale anywhere so have no idea.

Also the 75ml tube is very small. My current Colgate is 125ml tube, so this is a lot smaller so that needs to be taken into account.

LucyPie · 02/04/2015 20:05

Q1. What was your overall impression of Colgate® Maximum Cavity Protection plus Sugar Acid Neutraliser™ toothpaste?

I liked the texture as it didn't shoot out of the tube ......... but wonder if it will get harder to squeeze if it dries when we get closer to the end of the tube.

Q2. Would you replace your regular toothpaste with Colgate® Maximum Cavity Protection plus Sugar Acid Neutraliser™ toothpaste?

Possibly - will go back to our usual in a couple of weeks and see what I think of that one again to make the decision.

Q3. What did your DCs like most about Colgate® Maximum Cavity Protection plus Sugar Acid Neutraliser™ Kids toothpaste (such as taste, texture, packaging)?

Three year old twins - one refused point blank to have it more than twice - she wanted Mr Stripey which is what we call Aquafresh Little Teeth and could not be convinced to try the 'boring' looking new toothpaste. I can see that the packaging may appeal when they are older as it looks like mummy and daddys but maybe add a bit more of a kiddy character to the tube.

Q4. Would you recommend Colgate® Maximum Cavity Protection plus Sugar Acid Neutraliser™ to other parents?

Probably not at the moment for the kids one.

canichangemymind · 02/04/2015 21:24

Our first impressions were - fresh minty taste, mild scent and bright packaging which would catch my eye compared to other boxes on a shelf.

The full price of both the regular and children's products would put me off buying unless they were on offer.

My Dd loved the bright packet however as she is used to much milder tasting toothpaste it took her a few days to get used to it. After the initial surprise of how minty it is she now enjoyes the taste and I can smell it on her breath more than the product she used before.

I would recommend the product although one thing my Dh and I have noticed in our product was it seemed to leave a residue on our gum line! This went after a short while though.

Thanks for the profucts! we have enjoyed using them.

Batmam · 02/04/2015 21:47

Q1. What was your overall impression of Colgate® Maximum Cavity Protection plus Sugar Acid Neutraliser™ toothpaste?

Thanks for the poster, very useful. DD was not interested in the chart, stickers would've worked better or a 2min timer. I was disappointed to find no scientific explanation of how the neutraliser works which made me initially think it was just a gimmick.

Love the purple colour but would prefer a flip top. Like that the tube isn't as tall as other toothpastes.

Really like the thick, chalky texture of the toothpaste and that the taste isn't too strong or minty. I also like that it doesn't froth as much as other toothpastes.

You should consider selling the tube without the box as I always find this so wasteful, the box goes straight into the recycling and all the information is on the tube anyway.

Q2. Would you replace your regular toothpaste with Colgate® Maximum Cavity Protection plus Sugar Acid Neutraliser™ toothpaste?

Yes I would, sugar in our diet is a worry as we eat a lot of fruit and I don't want DC to end up with fillings like me.

You will alienate many potential buyers with the high price but I'm used to buying expensive high fluoride toothpaste and mouthwash from dentists.

10mo DS also eats a lot of fruit, are you planning a baby 0-2y milk teeth version?

Q3. What did your DCs like most about Colgate® Maximum Cavity Protection plus Sugar Acid Neutraliser™ Kids toothpaste (such as taste, texture, packaging)?

DD liked the purple and that she had a mini version of my toothpaste. I would've liked the kids label to be bigger on it to make it more clear that it was a kids' toothpaste (DH kept using the wrong one!)

DD noticed the different taste on first use but after that didn't comment on it. I'm still having to remind her not to swallow the paste while brushing (3yo) and don't put too much on her brush so for us the smaller sized tube suited, but can see that if you had lots of DC a larger kids tube would be better.

Q4. Would you recommend Colgate® Maximum Cavity Protection plus Sugar Acid Neutraliser™ to other parents?

Yes but would warn that it is expensive

Danso · 02/04/2015 22:33

Q1. What was your overall impression of Colgate® Maximum Cavity Protection plus Sugar Acid Neutraliser™ toothpaste?
We (my husband, me and two children) very much liked the toothpaste. The toothpaste tasted very nice and left a long lasting freshness. It is good to know that our teeth and especially the children's teeth are extra protected from acid attacks.

Q2. Would you replace your regular toothpaste with Colgate® Maximum Cavity Protection plus Sugar Acid Neutraliser™ toothpaste?
For the children definitely. For us probably, however I do suffer from sensitive teeth, so might have to switch back to Colgate Sensitive at some point.

Q3. What did your DCs like most about Colgate® Maximum Cavity Protection plus Sugar Acid Neutraliser™ Kids toothpaste (such as taste, texture, packaging)? They liked the taste of the toothpaste very much. I think the packaging very much appealed to them as well; it is quite shiny and as it almost looked like our toothpaste, it made them feel quite grown-up.

Q4. Would you recommend Colgate® Maximum Cavity Protection plus Sugar Acid Neutraliser™ to other parents? YES!

Below are some questions we would like you to answer but feel free to add any other comments you may have.

Q1. What was your overall impression of Colgate® Maximum Cavity Protection plus Sugar Acid Neutraliser™ toothpaste?

It was okay. Fairly mild but still felt minty after I had finished. Very foamy, which made it a bit messy, especially after the boy. it does seem to make my teeth feel clean for longer, which is a nice feeling.

Q2. Would you replace your regular toothpaste with Colgate® Maximum Cavity Protection plus Sugar Acid Neutraliser™ toothpaste?

Possibly, I like the idea very much and in practice it's okay too but the cost might put me off as it's quite a bit more than we usually spend on toothpaste. We are considering it though.

Q3. What did your DCs like most about Colgate® Maximum Cavity Protection plus Sugar Acid Neutraliser™ Kids toothpaste (such as taste, texture, packaging)?

They liked the taste, although my oldest (8) also used the adults and liked that so we would probably all use the same. Can't say they really noticed the packaging except to complain it was harder to squeeze than the normal one (5yo)

Q4. Would you recommend Colgate® Maximum Cavity Protection plus Sugar Acid Neutraliser™ to other parents?

I probably would as it's definitely a good idea.

shatteredstudentmum · 03/04/2015 09:44

Oh pooh, my quoting / copying didn't work properly, sorry Blush

leannew219 · 03/04/2015 10:25

Thank you for my free samples.

Firstly I really liked the packaging and thought the toothpastes looked appealing.
The adults toothpaste was great I loved it It left my mouth feeling really clean and with a fresh breath. The kids toothpaste had the same effect.
I would definitely recommend this product to people and will be using the new toothpaste to replace my regular brand along with my kids regular brand.

ThisIsOurBlanket · 03/04/2015 10:26

First impressions: we liked the purple packaging. I would like the kids one yo look a bit more distinct from the adult one - maybe the word kids written bigger, as it is easy to mix them up when I'm not wearing contact lenses. We all liked the taste - not especially distinctive, but perfectly pleasant.
I haven't noticed any difference in performance compared with other toothpastes, but I like the sugar neutralising idea.

Iprobably wouldn't switch, but I would buy this toothpaste when it was on offer.

My children loved the charts, and they like the minty flavour and purple packaging. I'd be more likely to buy it regularly for them than for myself.

I don't think I'd necessarily recommend to other mums - as I say I haven't really noticed much difference.
