This feedback thread is for the 250 Mumsnetters, who have participated in the Colgate® Maximum Cavity Protection plus Sugar Acid Neutraliser™ toothpaste product test with their DCs.

Here’s what Colgate says: “Did you know that 84% of children and all adults suffer from cavities at some point in their life*?

“Cavities, also known as tooth decay, are the most common chronic disease on the planet.
But cavities are preventable and this is why Colgate® has created a breakthrough new anti-cavity toothpaste called Colgate® Maximum Cavity Protection plus Sugar Acid NeutraliserTM.

“Providing close to double protection against early decay**, Colgate® Maximum Cavity Protection is the first and only toothpaste to contain Sugar Acid NeutraliserTM technology, that goes beyond the protection of fluoride, neutralising sugar acids in plaque – the #1 cause of cavities.

“Colgate’s Head of Scientific Affairs, Foti Panagakos comments:
“More and more we’re aware of the increasing levels of sugar in our diets and the negative impact this has on our health. The need for a toothpaste with built in Sugar Acid Neutraliser™ technology has never been so urgent. Colgate® Maximum Cavity Protection plus Sugar Acid Neutraliser™ will have a tremendous impact on the oral health of the nation.””

*UK Adult Dental Health Survey 2009, The Health and Social Care Information Centre
** Toothpaste with fluoride alone reduced by 32%

Q1. What was your overall impression of Colgate® Maximum Cavity Protection plus Sugar Acid Neutraliser™ toothpaste?

I am very happy with it, which was a pleasant surprise. I like everything from the packaging to the taste.

Q2. Would you replace your regular toothpaste with Colgate® Maximum Cavity Protection plus Sugar Acid Neutraliser™ toothpaste?

Yes. Actually my DS has already asked me to stop buying a certain other leading children's toothpaste brand and replace it with this.

Q3. What did your DCs like most about Colgate® Maximum Cavity Protection plus Sugar Acid Neutraliser™ Kids toothpaste (such as taste, texture, packaging)?

He likes the minty taste the most. So much so that to begin with he asked everybody to smell his breath because it was so "minty fresh!" Grin

He also especially likes the fact that it is not obviously a Children's product. He is almost 7, so is very conscious of appearing 'grown-up' Smile

Q4. Would you recommend Colgate® Maximum Cavity Protection plus Sugar Acid Neutraliser™ to other parents?

Most definitely, we've been converted! Thoroughly surprising as I have been using a 'premium' brand for many years. This product has definitely outperformed it Smile

confusedofengland · 24/03/2015 16:31

Q1. What was your overall impression of Colgate® Maximum Cavity Protection plus Sugar Acid Neutraliser™ toothpaste? I think it is a great idea, one that I haven't seen before, which tackles a genuine issue (children having more sugar than is good for their teeth). It is also well-executed - colourful, eye-catching packaging & a tasty product, which is good to attract children.

Q2. Would you replace your regular toothpaste with Colgate® Maximum Cavity Protection plus Sugar Acid Neutraliser™ toothpaste? I would certainly replace the DC's regular toothpaste with it. For myself & DH, I am not too sure, as I have special whitening toothpaste normally & DH has sensitive toothpaste recommended by his dentist, so maybe we would if it incorporated these factors, as well.

Q3. What did your DCs like most about Colgate® Maximum Cavity Protection plus Sugar Acid Neutraliser™ Kids toothpaste (such as taste, texture, packaging)? The DCs loved the taste, as well as the chart that came with the toothpaste to encourage their brushing Grin

Q4. Would you recommend Colgate® Maximum Cavity Protection plus Sugar Acid Neutraliser™ to other parents? Yes, I would recommend it - I think we are prone to giving children a lot of fruit in their diets now & this is a good thing to help combat one of the negative effects of this.

Summergarden · 24/03/2015 16:51

Q1. What was your overall impression of Colgate® Maximum Cavity Protection plus Sugar Acid Neutraliser™ toothpaste?

We liked it. It was something a bit different, with the purple colour, and I liked the eye catching packaging. Generally I prefer a more minty tasting toothpaste but soon got used to this one and liked it.

Q2. Would you replace your regular toothpaste with Colgate® Maximum Cavity Protection plus Sugar Acid Neutraliser™ toothpaste?

Yes, as long as the price compared well to my usual one.

Q3. What did your DCs like most about Colgate® Maximum Cavity Protection plus Sugar Acid Neutraliser™ Kids toothpaste (such as taste, texture, packaging)?

They liked the colour of it best and the taste.

Q4. Would you recommend Colgate® Maximum Cavity Protection plus Sugar Acid Neutraliser™ to other parents?

Yes-most parents are aware of the dangers that sugar poses to dental health and if special toothpastes can help them I'm sure lots of parents would want to try it, especially for their children.

BigfootFilesHisToesInYourTea · 24/03/2015 16:54

Q1. What was your overall impression of Colgate® Maximum Cavity Protection plus Sugar Acid Neutraliser™ toothpaste?

Pleasant flavour, it left my teeth feeling clean and mouth feeling fresh. I liked it.

Q2. Would you replace your regular toothpaste with Colgate® Maximum Cavity Protection plus Sugar Acid Neutraliser™ toothpaste?

Will have to see if it keeps sensitive teeth at bay but otherwise I prefer it to my usual toothpaste which isn't as 'fresh feeling', so I would consider switching.

Q3. What did your DCs like most about Colgate® Maximum Cavity Protection plus Sugar Acid Neutraliser™ Kids toothpaste (such as taste, texture, packaging)?

The kids say it tastes nicer than their usual one. I would be happy to switch to this for the kids as it makes life easier buying one kids toothpaste which is suitable for age 3+ rather than one for age 3-6, one age 6-8 or whatever.

I would personally prefer that the "Kids" on the packaging was larger/more prominent - the kids and adult versions aren't distinctive enough at a glance. I can see it being easy to pick up the wrong one (from the shelf in the shop or in the bathroom!).

Q4. Would you recommend Colgate® Maximum Cavity Protection plus Sugar Acid Neutraliser™ to other parents?

Early days, but so far I would.

sarahsnail · 24/03/2015 17:52

Q1. What was your overall impression of Colgate® Maximum Cavity Protection plus Sugar Acid Neutraliser™ toothpaste?

Packaging looks very nice and eye catching. Was a little unsure why the childrens one is half the size, yet looks like it contains the same ingredients and fluoride?? The children liked the idea of having a "kids" one the same as the grown ups.
The taste was subtle and surprisingly both children 4 and 6 like the minty taste.

Q2. Would you replace your regular toothpaste with Colgate® Maximum Cavity Protection plus Sugar Acid Neutraliser™ toothpaste

Yes, alongside the Colgate max white toothpaste that I like to use. I think I would buy just the adult tube rather than the childrens one, as they can use the adults one.

Q3. What did your DCs like most about Colgate® Maximum Cavity Protection plus Sugar Acid Neutraliser™ Kids toothpaste (such as taste, texture, packaging)?

They like the taste, it's milder than some of the mint childrens toothpaste that they have used before. They like the packaging.

Q4. Would you recommend Colgate® Maximum Cavity Protection plus Sugar Acid Neutraliser™ to other parents?

Yes, if it does what it claims and keeps our teeth cavity free then yes certainly.

WowOoo · 24/03/2015 17:56

Thank you for sending the toothpaste. The children were very excited to test it!

Q1. Overall impression - good! I like 'white' toothpastes rather than gel types. It didn't have any bits in it that I could see either. Lovely taste and texture and my teeth felt very clean after trying it for the first time.

Q2. Maybe - but this depends on the price. If it was on offer, I'd think about it. The RRP stated on the info sheet made me say 'No Way!'. But, I certainly liked it a lot.

Q3. They were happy it wasn't a 'yucky silly berry flavour'. They liked the taste and texture. I think we all prefer a white, chalky kind of toothpaste. The kids' version tastes nice to me and they agreed it wasn't an intense mint which my youngest might spit out in shock.

I do think it's nice for older children that there is no cartoon character on the packet. It made my eldest feel like he was a bit more grown up.

Q4. Yes, I would. It seems to work well and the children are happy to use it.

EauPea · 24/03/2015 17:59

Q1. What was your overall impression of Colgate® Maximum Cavity Protection plus Sugar Acid Neutraliser™ toothpaste?

The packaging is very appealing, really like the purple. Teeth feel really clean, which I usually only find with the gritty toothpastes. Dd really likes the taste, minty but not too strong. It's quite thick so stays on Dd's toothbrush when she turns it on.

Q2. Would you replace your regular toothpaste with Colgate® Maximum Cavity Protection plus Sugar Acid Neutraliser™ toothpaste?

Definitely for Dd, whilst she doesn't drink juice or eat sweets she does eat a fair amount of fruit (and hidden sugars) so the Sugar Acid Neutraliser is a big selling point for us. We would probably swap too, as long as it keeps sensitivity in check.

Q3. What did your DCs like most about Colgate® Maximum Cavity Protection plus Sugar Acid Neutraliser™ Kids toothpaste (such as taste, texture, packaging)?

Dd really loves the fact it looks just like Mummy and Daddy's, she likes the minty taste and the slightly thicker texture, certainly a big hit here.

Q4. Would you recommend Colgate® Maximum Cavity Protection plus Sugar Acid Neutraliser™ to other parents?

Yes I will be recommending.

Nickles83 · 24/03/2015 18:07

Q1. What was your overall impression of Colgate® Maximum Cavity Protection plus Sugar Acid Neutraliser™ toothpaste?

First a strange after taste was left, I had this with a lot of newer toothpastes lately I think it's the hidden extras. It left my mouth feeling clean and fresh.

Q2. Would you replace your regular toothpaste with Colgate® Maximum Cavity Protection plus Sugar Acid Neutraliser™ toothpaste?

Yes I most likely would.

Q3. What did your DCs like most about Colgate® Maximum Cavity Protection plus Sugar Acid Neutraliser™ Kids toothpaste (such as taste, texture, packaging)?

Both of my liked the taste and it was over minty they have been enjoying using it. They also loved he teeth brushing chart.

Q4. Would you recommend Colgate® Maximum Cavity Protection plus Sugar Acid Neutraliser™ to other parents?

Yes.

TelephoneIgnoringMachine · 24/03/2015 18:57

Q1. What was your overall impression of Colgate® Maximum Cavity Protection plus Sugar Acid Neutraliser™ toothpaste?

  • Strange taste, sort of chalky, with an odd aftertaste. It left our teeth feeling really clean. It did leave me with nice fresh breath. Like a PP, I also struggled to open the tube a couple of times, especially with wet hands - could do with a flip-top lid as I found this a bit fiddly (my grip isn't great & I imagine this would be a real problem for anyone with joint issues).

Q2. Would you replace your regular toothpaste with Colgate® Maximum Cavity Protection plus Sugar Acid Neutraliser™ toothpaste?

  • No - I don't like the chalky taste. Plus I would generally not pay this much for an adult toothpaste. The kids one is probably priced about right as it does go further - for us, anyway.

Q3. What did your DCs like most about Colgate® Maximum Cavity Protection plus Sugar Acid Neutraliser™ Kids toothpaste (such as taste, texture, packaging)?

  • DD wasn't interested in the packaging. Her initial reaction on trying it was "yuck!" and she wouldn't use it again.

Q4. Would you recommend Colgate® Maximum Cavity Protection plus Sugar Acid Neutraliser™ to other parents?

Yes - however they would need to be aware that the kids version is quite strong tasting - minty and a bit chalky.

timeforacheckup · 24/03/2015 19:39

Q1. What was your overall impression of Colgate® Maximum Cavity Protection plus Sugar Acid Neutraliser™ toothpaste?

I was initially unimpressed as my teeth didn't feel as clean straight after brushing as normal. However, they felt much cleaner than normal the next morning and my mouth felt fresher. The flavour was a bit mild for my liking. I liked the colour of the packaging but it felt a bit flimsy when I opened it, as though it was all going to shoot out when I opened the lid.

Q2. Would you replace your regular toothpaste with Colgate® Maximum Cavity Protection plus Sugar Acid Neutraliser™ toothpaste?

Yes, I would as it's benefits seem longer lasting.

Q3. What did your DCs like most about Colgate® Maximum Cavity Protection plus Sugar Acid Neutraliser™ Kids toothpaste (such as taste, texture, packaging)?

Dd1 loved the fact the it looked like the grownup version and liked the colours. She was initially unsure of the taste but soon got used to it.

Q4. Would you recommend Colgate® Maximum Cavity Protection plus Sugar Acid Neutraliser™ to other parents?

Yes I would.

sallyst123 · 24/03/2015 19:54

Hi thank you for the chance to try the toothpaste.

Our overall impression was positive. We all like the color of the packaging great purple color. It looks like a "high end" product.
The kids liked the taste which was a pleasant surprise as they don't usually like the minty toothpastes
I like a stronger taste (one of my favourite brand of toothpaste is the euthymol one)
But it did make our teeth feel lovely & clean for ages afterwards.

We vary our toothpaste depending what's on offer but yes I would buy this again. Esp because of the added sugar neutraliser!

My dc liked the fact that they had the same toothpaste like mom & dad's. As I said before they enjoyed the flavour too.
& the brush charts that came with them were a nice touch ?

I will be recommending this toothpaste to friends & family its a great quality product esp with the sugar protection that I think we can all do with the extra help with.

BethyT34 · 24/03/2015 19:57

Q1 - My family really liked the Colgate maximum cavity protection, the adult toothpaste was minty (but not overpowering - tasted like it had bi carbonate of soda in it as well. I also think I have noticed that my teeth are whiter and I've only be using it for 4 days!) my daughter likes the taste of the child's toothpaste and is happy to have her teeth tickled! I agree with other mners that focussing on fruit acid is a real USP, we eat a lot of fruit in our family and I have had a few fillings over my 30years of life so anything to protect my child would be attractive to me.

Q2 - Yes I will be replacing our toothpaste. It would be good if you could make an acid neutraliser sensitive toothpaste.

Q3 - my daughter likes the taste and the packaging as it looks like Mommy and Daddy's toothpaste. I think a good perk would be to offer the teething chart to everyone who purchases the product. I have had ours laminated so that we can re use it. Anything to encourage good dental hygiene.

Q4 - yes I would and already have recommended it. However I have to add that the television advert doesn't do the product justice and I think this should be re done.

Chesterell · 24/03/2015 20:17

Q1. Overall very positive, we are big fruit eaters and I'm hoping it helps with the sugar acid.
Q2. At the moment I'd have to say no. I really don't like the after taste of the adult version. DS loves his though.
Q3. My DS loves the taste, he also likes the fact that it's for kids as he usually has to use our toothpaste. Has really encouraged his 2 minute brush at night time as he tries to get out of this brush!
Q4. I would recommend the toothpaste to other parents but I think they need to change the adult flavour as it really isn't nice.

Jellylove · 24/03/2015 20:18

Q1. My overall impression was very positive. The packaging looks is smart/professional and gives the impression of quality. I liked the fact that the kids toothpaste mirrors the packaging of the adults one.

Q2. I would consider swapping my toothpaste for this one, but I would prefer it if they did a 'whitening' one in this range. For the kids toothpaste I would definitely swap as they have made the change with ease, they like it and this toothpaste has greater benefits.

Q3. My kids both like the minty taste which is great as they don't like all mint toothpastes. They said that they like the way their teeth/mouth feels after brushing. Which in my books is 100% success as I didn't expect much feedback from them! I honestly thought they wouldn't go for the minty flavour but I was wrong. So well done! They quite liked the purple packaging too.

Q4. Yes I would recommend this toothpaste as it has been so well received by my (often fickle) kids, so you must have got the flavour right. After dinner when fruit is often consumed by the kids, this toothpaste is just what's required, another point to recommend it to other parents.

CookieDoughKid · 24/03/2015 20:20

Also I found this toothpaste 'stickier' sticking to my teeth more during brushing. Did anyone else notice the same??

Jellylove · 24/03/2015 20:21

I forgot to add I liked the adult flavour,

missorinoco · 24/03/2015 20:28

Thankyou for this.

Q1. What was your overall impression of Colgate® Maximum Cavity Protection plus Sugar Acid Neutraliser™ toothpaste?

I liked it. I didn't find it very minty compared to my regular toothpaste, but this didn't put me off it.

Q2. Would you replace your regular toothpaste with Colgate® Maximum Cavity Protection plus Sugar Acid Neutraliser™ toothpaste?

Yes, although so far this would be dependant on price. I like the sound of sugar acid neutraliser, but it competes against pro white et al. If I used it for a while and had no fillings/my dentist noticed a difference I would pay more.

Q3. What did your DCs like most about Colgate® Maximum Cavity Protection plus Sugar Acid Neutraliser™ Kids toothpaste (such as taste, texture, packaging)?

The chart! And the idea of a product test. They didn't really notice the packaging, and neither did I until reading this question. My five year old intensely dislikes the minty taste, but is persevering as it is a product taste and she is motivated to put a tick on her chart. The older child uses it uncomplainingly.

Q4. Would you recommend Colgate® Maximum Cavity Protection plus Sugar Acid Neutraliser™ to other parents?

Yes. This is a great concept.

As an extra, I think the chart is a good way to get children who might previously have been having their teeth brushed for them brushing themselves, and similarly the fact that it is a child version of an adult toothpaste would appeal to a child who needs to switch to an older child toothpaste.

I really like the suggestion of an eggtimer though. You could have a Colgate chart to download and print off from the internet. I am aware there are lots of sticker charts out there, and my children have had several, but that this one came with the toothpaste really appealed to them.

kewtogetin · 24/03/2015 20:41

Q1. Good product, covering a 'problem' no other toothpaste seems to. I liked the packaging but it wasn't quite minty enough for me, a big too mild and chalky.

Q2. Yes I would replace my current toothpaste, I think I would stock up when it was on offer as the rrp is more than I normally pay for toothpaste. I would also like a whitening version.

Q3. My children liked it, they both thought it was a bit too minty though, but as a parent I prefer a minty toothpaste to a fruit/gel version. I don't understand why the tube was so small though. It also didn't have very 'child friendly' packaging, not a problem for older children but it doesn't really appeal to younger children in the same way that aqua fresh/the nurdles does. Maybe promo packs could come with a brush/timer or a timer app could be developed?

Q4. Yes I would recommend it to other parents.

Amazing logistics from Colgate - from e-mail letting us know we had been selected to samples arriving was very slick, and it was nice to have the extra info with the samples. Well done Colgate-Palmolive!

Q1. What was your overall impression of Colgate® Maximum Cavity Protection plus Sugar Acid Neutraliser™ toothpaste?

I'm torn. I really like the idea of the neutralisation, but the look and feel is a bit strange - looks slightly off compared to the very smooth, white toothpaste I'm used to. It also feels like the bicarb toothpastes I can't stand because they leave a gritty feeling in my mouth. That said, it doesn't leave a post brush grittyness, and I do think my mouth feels cleaner after use.

Q2. Would you replace your regular toothpaste with Colgate® Maximum Cavity Protection plus Sugar Acid Neutraliser™ toothpaste?

At the rrp? Probably not. If it was on offer, I would consider it, but would probably mix and match.

Q3. What did your DCs like most about Colgate® Maximum Cavity Protection plus Sugar Acid Neutraliser™ Kids toothpaste (such as taste, texture, packaging)?

Is this how the lid opens (screw rather than flip top). Thats COOL!

That said, the 3 yr old is refusing to use it, and the 5 yr old is only sticking with it because I've said its a 2 week trial to see what we think. He prefers the usual paste - that could be resistance to change tho.

Q4. Would you recommend Colgate® Maximum Cavity Protection plus Sugar Acid Neutraliser™ to other parents?

Don't know. The main selling point is long term - reduction in cavities. Would need more time to see if that actually makes a difference.

Back to read other people's comments!

dizzyem · 24/03/2015 21:00

Q1. What was your overall impression of Colgate® Maximum Cavity Protection plus Sugar Acid Neutraliser™ toothpaste?

Both myself and my daughters think that the toothpaste tastes great. I think that it is much better than previous toothpastes from Colgate. I like the fact that it neutralises sugar acid as however much we tell them, my daughters still help themselves to biscuits and sweets but they do balance with fruit. The packaging looks fresh and appealing too.

Q2. Would you replace your regular toothpaste with Colgate® Maximum Cavity Protection plus Sugar Acid Neutraliser™ toothpaste?

At the current time, I cannot replace my current toothpaste due to some medication I am on which reduces saliva in my mouth and so I have to be on some high fluoride paste but my daughter has asked me if she can keep this one and she is really fussy about her toothpaste! so its obviously a big hit with her :)

Q3. What did your DCs like most about Colgate® Maximum Cavity Protection plus Sugar Acid Neutraliser™ Kids toothpaste (such as taste, texture, packaging)?

They liked the packaging and the fact that it was a new thing to try. They like the taste - one so much she wants me to buy it again and she usually changes her toothpaste each time she comes to the end of a tube if not sooner as she goes off them.

Q4. Would you recommend Colgate® Maximum Cavity Protection plus Sugar Acid Neutraliser™ to other parents?

Absolutely I would. I would like a dentist's endorsement as well.

addictedtosugar · 24/03/2015 21:01

OK, I'm off to try the kids paste tonight, and see if its different!

toptomatoes · 24/03/2015 21:08

Q1. What was your overall impression of Colgate® Maximum Cavity Protection plus Sugar Acid Neutraliser™ toothpaste?

When I first tried it, I thought the texture was a little chalky and it is a milder mint flavour than I prefer but I was surprised how fresh it left my mouth feeling and I got used to the different taste and texture quickly. I liked the packaging and think the purple stands out. I like the concept as we are fruit lovers in this house.

Q2. Would you replace your regular toothpaste with Colgate® Maximum Cavity Protection plus Sugar Acid Neutraliser™ toothpaste?

We don't have a usual brand but buy on offer. If on promotion, I would choose this.

Q3. What did your DCs like most about Colgate® Maximum Cavity Protection plus Sugar Acid Neutraliser™ Kids toothpaste (such as taste, texture, packaging)?
My 8 year old preferred it to his usual toothpaste (think we have aquafresh big teeth) and definitely prefers a minty taste to a fruity one. The 4 year old didn't comment but was happy to have his teeth brushed with it so it wasn't too strong for him. They had no particular comments about the packaging but are not interested in toothpaste packaging unless it has characters on. it didn't look particularly aimed at children.

Q4. Would you recommend Colgate® Maximum Cavity Protection plus Sugar Acid Neutraliser™ to other parents?

Yes, it's a good product and if it lives up to its claims then it is a good choice.

BeansInBoots · 24/03/2015 21:10

  1. What was your overall impression of Colgate® Maximum Cavity Protection plus Sugar Acid Neutraliser™ toothpaste?

It's okay! We tend to buy whatever toothpaste is on offer and this is one of the better ones. I don't like toothpaste which is too minty so this is good, although I have noticed my teeth are duller/ more yellow since I stopped using a whitening toothpaste once a day.

Q2. Would you replace your regular toothpaste with Colgate® Maximum Cavity Protection plus Sugar Acid Neutraliser™ toothpaste?

If it was on offer for £1 or so I would pick it over any other

Q3. What did your DCs like most about Colgate® Maximum Cavity Protection plus Sugar Acid Neutraliser™ Kids toothpaste (such as taste, texture, packaging)?

Taste and texture were fine, dd loved the fact it looked the same as mine, although she has ended up using mine a few times because they are so similar, a slightly bigger variation might be useful- maybe the children's could have a flip lid? DD dropped her lid in the toilet.. Blush

We didn't use the reward chart as brushing teeth is a total non negotionable in our house (like seatbelts etc)

Q4. Would you recommend Colgate® Maximum Cavity Protection plus Sugar Acid Neutraliser™ to other parents?

I would, but it's pretty impossible to know if it's doing what it says..

Swex · 24/03/2015 21:44

q1. Overall impression of the acid Neutraliser™ toothpaste?
We were very happy with it. We trust the brand and I liked the concept of acid neutralising as the dc eat a lot of fruit and snacks.

Q2. Would you replace your regular toothpaste with Colgate® Maximum Cavity Protection plus Sugar Acid Neutraliser™ toothpaste?
Yes. Probably would if the price was comparable as why wouldn't you, to gain that extra protection

Q3. What did your DCs like most about Colgate® Maximum Cavity Protection plus Sugar Acid Neutraliser™ Kids toothpaste (such as taste, texture, packaging)?
Liked the packaging to be similar to mine, acceptable taste and texture. Nice frothiness.

Q4. Would you recommend Colgate® Maximum Cavity Protection plus Sugar Acid Neutraliser™ to other parents?
Yes but not in an evangelical kind of way - just in passing
