Pearson's Book Panel - Ages 1-7 - Review thread

AnnMumsnet · 25/07/2011 09:29

You may know Mumsnet have been working with Pearson to provide some special learning-related content for you. Linked to the site is a Pearson shop where you can buy educational books for children. We invited MNers with a child aged between 1 and 7 to review the books available and this thread is for the reviews. Panellists will be sent up to 5 packs of books and reviews will continue to be added each month until the end of the year. Pearson will link to this thread from the shop.

As a thank you for taking part there will be a monthly prize draw for reviewers for all those who have submitted a review in that month. The prize each month will be £50 of John Lewis vouchers - the first draw will take place on 31 August and will be for one prize of £100 of John Lewis vouchers.

Below are the questions Pearson would like you to answer - when posting your review please add in the age of your child and please include the question as well as your response.

Q1 Which pack or books did you and your child review? Was the pack of books for "learning to read" or "reading together"?
Q2 If a "learning to read" pack, how do the books compare with the reading practice books your child brings home from school? Which reading scheme does your child use at school?
Q3 Would you say your child enjoy reading or looking at the books? Why/why not?
Q4 What's your overall review of the book pack?
Q5 And what is your child's review of the book pack?
Q6 Would you recommend these books to another parent? Why/why not?
Q7 Do you think your child would recommend these books to their friends (if they are old enough!)? Why/why not?
Q8 What star rating would you give this pack of books overall? Please use a rating system out of 5 where 1 star is poor and 5 stars are excellent

Many thanks
MNHQ

Hi, I've received a pack of books today and like a few others the Read at Home with Bug Club set looks exactly the same as the ones we received last time. ( I haven't opened it so it can be returned) The colour young puffins look great, we're looking forward to reading them!

FjorgynAndHotWater · 22/09/2011 18:48

We got a lovely big pack of books today which we are taking on holiday with us tomorrow - they will be perfect Grin Like everyone else though we also got another set of the first lot of books we received.

BornToFolk · 22/09/2011 19:20

Yep, we got the same set as before too - the Phonics Bugs ones.

We also got two board books, with touchy-feely patches. They are lovely books but given that DS is nearly 4, not really appropriate.

WhatWouldLeoDo · 22/09/2011 19:29

Oh, have just emailed Ann to say the exact same thing. We got the same pack as before plus a pack of baby touchy-feel books.

lisad123 · 22/09/2011 20:18

Did not want to seem ungrateful but we been sent board books, colours and numbers. Dd2 is 4 years old, and we are more ahead with elmer and kipper type books

MoChan · 23/09/2011 09:13

Hello. We have received one pack of books only and it's exactly the same as the first pack.

Fillybuster · 23/09/2011 11:15

Sorry to add to the misery....

Same books here (the whole of Bug Club for Year 2) plus a small pack of 3 paperbacks that don't look entirely appropriate for DS Hmm

If Pearson are accepting requests, can I repeat how enthusiastically the Charlottes Web/Railway Children etc pack would be welcomed in this house? Grin

funnypeculiar · 23/09/2011 11:18

Just to say I haven't received any new books yet - is there a cut off date when we should expect to have them through?

silverfrog · 23/09/2011 11:22

I'm another one who has not received anything yet (although that might be a good thing, as don't need the same pack again!)

iloveblue · 23/09/2011 11:22

Hi
We received our books yesterday and like lots of other people one of our packs (Bug Club Year 2) was exactly the same as last time.
We also received a pack of 3 puffins which look great thanks.
I've also left ours unopened so we can return them.

funnypeculiar · 23/09/2011 12:20

Ah, they've just arrived. I have two packs - one is a repeat of our books from last time (Dinosaurs/Too many jobs/Z&Zap) other is new (blue pack)

Fillybuster · 23/09/2011 12:57

Vividgingerchilli - can we swap books? MNHQ say that they would be happy about this...

....

....I don't suppose you live in London?! Grin

meala · 23/09/2011 13:04

Hi there

Our next pack of books has just arrived.
We got Read at home turquoise and purple packs.

Unfortunately, we had the turquoise pack last time so I have left them sealed in their packaging.

Do I return these?

Eddas · 23/09/2011 13:42

I too have recieved my books and have the exact ones I got last time, with an additional pack Hmm

I'll wait and see what I should do with them!

SpareRoomSleeper · 23/09/2011 14:52

Yes, me too! I can share with my tutor group (we're on the primary pgce group) if that's ok? I got the each peach pack again!

Moodykat · 23/09/2011 18:13

Same here I'm afraid!

SeenButNotHeard · 23/09/2011 18:37

Sorry to add to the tales of woe...

We received the same book pack as in the summer (year 2, read at home) along with a really lovely set of three - the Secret Garden, The railway Children and Charlotte's Web which although are wonderful to have, are aimed at 7-9 year olds I think and far to difficult for my dd.
I am more than happy to read them to her though.

I am happy to return, give the books to a friend (and ask them for feedback) or donate the pack to our school. Would love to keep the Secret Garden pack for next year if this is ok, but understand totally if I need to return them.

ClaimedByMe · 23/09/2011 20:54

Mine came today and we got the right pack plus the big pack that i got sent wrongly the first time round so have left them wrapped up until further notice!

Cantdothisagain · 24/09/2011 07:19

Same issue as others here- one pack containing same two books as last time, then a pack with another 2 books in which I'll review.

CandiceMariePratt · 24/09/2011 08:39

Same here too. We got sent the same ones as last time and a new lot. I'm affraid dd has opened them all as she was so excited to get them.

silverfrog · 24/09/2011 08:49

Got ours this morning. We too received two packs, but confusingly neither is a repeat of our last pack Confused

We got (this is what it says on the labels - haven't opened them, but not sure I can hold out against dd2 for much longer!):

Phonics bug pack 2 (4 fiction books inc. Tut Tut Pup and The Bop), and
Read at home Bug Club Pink pack.

Dd2 is very excited, as she has stormed ahead in reading since starting reception.

whimsy · 24/09/2011 09:53

The same here, received the new pack plus a repeat of the last pack we received.

OvO · 24/09/2011 09:58

Where are miiiiiiiine? Sob.

lisad123 · 24/09/2011 11:11

Can someone from mnhq come and let us know what we are meant to do with books we have doubles of?

AnnMumsnet · 24/09/2011 13:33

Sorry - thought I'd posted - I am hoping to email you next week with a note from Pearson...please bear with for the mo!
If you feel like you don't have the right books this time (disregarding the doubled up ones from last time) please can you email me with details?
