Webchat with Nick Clegg - Tuesday 9 May at midday

Hello,

We’re pleased to announce a webchat with Nick Clegg on Tuesday 9 May at midday.

Nick is currently campaigning to keep his seat in Sheffield Hallam, where he has been the MP since 2005. He was leader of the Liberal Democrats from 2007-2015, and Deputy Prime Minister in the coalition government from 2010-2015, overseeing the introduction of shared parental leave, the pupil premium for disadvantaged children, and equal marriage - as well as increasing student fees. He’s also been on the losing side of two referendums, campaigning to introduce the Alternative Vote system, and to Remain in the EU.

Last week saw the publication of the paperback version of his book Politics: Between the Extremes, in which Nick lays out his assessment of the British political landscape - ‘nationalism resurgent, mainstream parties in turmoil, stark new divisions and the centre ground deserted’ - and offers his prescription for ‘a new politics based on reason and compromise’.

Please do join us on the day - Tuesday 9 May at midday - or if you can’t make it, post a question in advance on this thread.

Please remember our webchat guidelines: one question each, with a follow-up to the webchat guest's response if appropriate; please don't keep posting 'what about me/please answer my question'; and please be civil/polite.

(As we approach the General Election we will endeavour to offer you a balanced diet of webchats with politicians from different parties - as ever, slightly constrained by their availability! Keep your eyes peeled for more announcements.)

Thanks
MNHQ

Thanks Nick, you just made my mind up on who I am voting for. And it wont be Corbyn lol

I've been sadly put off by the answer to the prostitution question. Would be interested to know how many women were on the "working group" and how much pressure they had from the pro-prostitution lobby. I know it's a niche thing to care about but I genuinely can't understand how a truly equal society is possible when one sex is legally supported to treat the other as a commodity Sad.

Not sure why there was so much negativity on this chat - really appreciate the moderation the lib debs brought to the coalition, the research mentioned here on legalised brothels is true, it's lead to an increase in sexual health for sex workers, protection from abuse and less exploitation. Nick has been a strong and articulate campaigner on brexit - It's hard to think of someone in politics representing national interests better. I would feel really lucky to be represented by Nick Clegg.

MNHQ are any other politicians coming on for a webchat?

Bookaboo · 09/05/2017 22:19

Thanks for answering my question Nick.
You said that "The exam question facing us now is different: are we prepared to step up to the plate and provide effective Opposition?" I'm a bit puzzled about why Vince Cable seems to be advocating tactical voting and supporting labour candidates if necessary, he's obviously not on the same page!
I know nobody is going to answer at this point Smile

really appreciate the moderation the lib dema brought to the coalition
Absolutely agree April.

muckypup73 · 10/05/2017 13:08

MrsHathaway, I am going to have a read,thanks x

"Thanks for not answering my question - proves my point - pathetic"

Why should he answer your question when you immediately answered it yourself in an offensive manner, using your own opinion and prejudices?

Wellysocksbox · 12/05/2017 16:05

JEZZA hit the headlines for his rather parsimonious answer to the biscuit question "I'm anti sugar" he said. Poor sugar, I bet sugar feels quite discriminated against.
