MNHQ here: write to your MP about childcare as infrastructure - Parliamentary vote on Tuesday!

Hi there,

As many of you will know (and inspired by the countless stories we've heard from Mumsnet users about the difficulties of finding affordable and accessible provision), we've been banging on for some time about how childcare should be treated as the vital infrastructure that it is - rather than as an afterthought by the government.

Tomorrow, MPs will have the chance to vote on an amendment to the Levelling Up Bill tabled by Stella Creasy and backed by a cross-party group of MPs, which will change the law to explicitly allow local authorities to use Infrastructure Levy funds – raised by charging the developers of new housing in their areas – to provide new childcare places locally.

This is not a silver bullet that will magically fix the childcare crisis - but we think it's an important step in recognising childcare as a crucial part of local infrastructure, alongside schools, GP surgeries and public transport, as well as providing much-needed funding for the provision of affordable childcare places.

If you agree, please do take a few minutes today to contact your MP and ask them to vote for Amendment 2 to the Levelling Up and Regeneration Bill when it comes to the House of Commons tomorrow. You can find contact details for your MP here.

Thanks!
MNHQ
